A Little Bit About Me...

My tutoring experiences began in 1997 while I was a student at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh, NY. The head of the Math department, Mr. Mike Hellinger, recognized my aptitude for understanding both algebra and calculus at an early stage in my education and asked if I would be willing to tutor these two subjects in the Academic Assistance Center located right on the college campus. After helping dozens of students attain the passing grades or achieve higher marks I was soon affiliated with VESID, an organization which is part of the NYS Educational Department which focuses on students and other individuals who have learning and/or financial limitations and disabilities.
For the purpose of effectiveness, and to be as organized as possible, I like to start each lesson with material review time. The amount of time spent reviewing depends entirely on two things: 1) the leve ... read more

When helping others, I do it two ways. I tell them how to do it and guide them through it. Other times, I show them how to do it. However, I do not do it for them. I would love to have the chance to help children succeed in their education! It would be an honor!

I am a hands on teacher who really relates one on one to students. As a Business Teacher I have had to keep my knowledge of business up to date with new technologies. I can help and be very effective in most subject areas for elementary. With regards to MS & HS I would limit my tutoring to areas of English, Social Studies, Economics, and Business. The only areas of Math would be basic adding/subtracting, multiplying/dividing and learning scientific notations. As a Business Teacher and having a Masters Degree I totally understand how to write papers & format correctly using a PC. This should be an incredible help for your child. I truly enjoy teaching.

My teaching style is a combination of techniques I found successful during my educational studies. First, I believe the teacher has to be passionate and have a true love for what he or she is doing; this is passion, or lack thereof, is evident when interacting with a student. Second, patience is of upmost importance. In my experience, nothing inhibits learning as much as a rushed or pressured feeling when one is trying to learn. Finally, it is critical to find a way for the student to relate to the material in a way they understand. Each person is different and the teaching style should reflect that; not everyone fits nicely into a cookie cut template of learning. Every person has the potential to learn anything as long as the opportunity is fairly presented – as a parent of a special needs child, this is something I know very well.
I have had many years of educational instructing ... read more

More About This Tutor...

During my sophomore year as an undergraduate at the University of Florida, I spent my spare time tutoring/mentoring a third grade student at a local Gainesville elementary school. We spent ample time going over reading and math assignments. I also career mentored eighth grade students in the Richland County School District in Columbia, SC. I have learned strong writing and basic mathematical skills at my current position as a media planner.
My teaching style is parallel to my learning style. I appreciate explanations that are thorough and tailored to my interests. I've learned that concepts and ideas are easier to understand if they refer back to something I can relate to. I aspire to become someone a child can look up to, as well as understand. I want them to be comfortable coming to me with any questions they may have.

More About This Tutor...

I have always wanted students to really know the material being covered. This has meant keeping their interest through jovial yet concentrated lesson planning. I have always strived to make my students feel comfortable and to take on the responsibility for their own learning. Much too often Educators show students how to answer questions rather than helping the student learn how to handle new scenarios. This is the essence of my teaching: helping students see the big picture so that they can handle any new scenario. My classroom always has many things going on at once, which is a direct result of the student driven learning and presenting.

My extensive experience in different subjects and venues has engendered in me an adaptive teaching style. I am very comfortable teaching in both a classroom setting as well as one-to-one. I truly believe that the key to learning is proper motivation. Rather than giving answers to a student who is having difficulties, I prefer to guide students, prodding them along in the right direction with directed prompts. My goal is to have a student retain what he or she has learned from going over a particular subject rather than simply memorize and immediately discard.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to educate children of many ages I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old in the house. You teach many different aspects of life, not just academically. Being a tutor for grades 6-8 was different because they had the basics. They needed to be informed and focused. Substitute teaching grades K-8 was rather different because the children acted as though they haven't learned anything, so you had to make them feel comfortable. I love teaching with repetition and visual. With patience, understanding, and love a child can learn anything.

A Little Bit About Me...

The teaching style that I feel is most effective is by constantly practicing what you are not good at and struggling with it. By struggling first to understand the concept/theory or process, it is my belief that once the student learns it, they will truly understand and keep that knowledge with them for a much longer period of time rather than telling them what to do step by step.
As a graduate from the Business School at Siena College, I have gained a wealth of knowledge pertaining to the study of concepts and theories in the world of accounting and finance. Although the intent of my degree was to utilize it for its direct application within the scope of a business, I feel as though I would be very effective at teaching the material I just got done learning. While at Siena, I did a small amount of tutoring for the quantitative business analysis string of courses, which deals wi ... read more
