β€œTo know how to suggest is the art of teaching.”

I have recently graduated and am eager to share my knowledge with others. During my time in school, I became an AP Scholar, Presidential Scholar, 21st Century Scholar, and Honor Graduate. I graduated in the top ten percent of my class and am dedicated to the education of others. I am currently pursuing a degree in education.
Learning should be a fun experience for children and adults alike, and while I maintain structure, I also want to make sure that students are enjoying the time that they spend learning with me. I am a patient teacher, and as someone who went through school with ADD, I understand the difficulties many children face in traditional classroom settings.

My comments on tutoring Reading : As a tutor of 10th- and 11th-grade foreign exchange students, I have found that advancing their reading comprehension skills serves as a prelude to massaging their competency in writing. I am also hired each year by Pearson Education, Inc. to assess the reading comprehension skills of fifth graders taking the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA test).

I advocate a "hands-on" approach that affords students an opportunity to feel as if they are teaching themselves and I am there only to facilitate the process.
I am foremost a writer whose 38-year, award-winning career is rooted in journalism. However, I also have an extensive teaching background. I have taught writing labs at St. Thomas University – Miami, Florida (1987-88), Mississippi State University (1988-89) and Texas A&M University (1989-93); and I currently offer tutoring services to 10th- and 11th-grade foreign exchange students from all over the world. Some of my tutoring involves preparing students to take the college-entrance SAT. I am particularly qualified to do this from a writing perspective, because the College Board contracts me each year to assess the essays students submit as part of their SAT testing. In a similar fashion, Pearson Education, I ... read more

Reading, Writing, and More

I have no set style of teaching. I try to understand how to benefit the individual by examining their needs. Then, we go from there. Some students need an analytical approach, so the material can best be presented as a formula. Others need a creative approach. It really just depends on the student.
I have a Bachelors in English Literature w/a certificate in Technical Writing from the University of North Texas. I have put myself through school by working as server part-time. This has given me a great deal of patience. I have experience as an office manager for an apartment locator, and I have tutored my friends through their English courses.

My comments on tutoring Reading : As a life-long learner, I enjoy reading all sorts of material every day - fiction and non-fiction, newspapers (real ones and on-line!), magazines and education journals. I enjoy reading a variety of non-fiction topics, including the fields of history, politics, science, health and current world events.

I treat children with the same respect and dignity that I treat adults, regardless of their age. I don't use "baby voices," as my goal is to elevate them to their highest academic levels. I've been told I'm a "cool" teacher by students because I treat them "like people, not kids." I use humor whenever appropriate, if that "hooks" a student. I do whatever is necessary to engage the individual personalities of each child and endeavor to make whatever it is I'm teaching them meaningful to their immediate lives.
I have joyfully taught students in grades 1 through 5 in Los Angeles urban schools, and in the suburbs of Plano. I have also been a Literacy Coach, assisting teachers in grades kindergarten through fifth to enhance their teaching skills in reading, writing, vocabulary, phonics, etc. - all areas of literacy. I have worked one-on-one and in small groups with "at-risk" students to ... read more

Brain-based, student-centered
I'm Ebony! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's in Cognitive Studies and Education, and earned a Master's degree with distinction in Curriculum and Instruction. I am a Cognitive Specialist/neuroeducator whose sole objective is bridging the divide between the student and the content, using methods based on the individual's learning style. As I think back to when I have achieved most success as a student, it was always because of a phenomenal educator who taught the content in ways that appealed to my learning style. I was immersed in the content, and I thrived because of it. I provide the same instructional strategies and experiences for my students, who vary from children with neurological differences such as Autism, Dyslexia, and other learning differences, to gifted students, to adults who never learned how to read or perform mathematics. Education is not a preparation for life, it is life itself!

I have more than 15 years of experience in teaching English to students with different backgrounds. I have teaching experience with various age groups including children and adults. I teach reading, reading comprehention, writing, grammar, spelling as well as general English using innovative methods that gets students involved in their wn teaching.
I use a critical pedagogical perspective in teaching English to students where students have active participation in their own learning. I believe that minds of students are not considered as where information are deposited and they are actively involved in their own learning. To me education is not a preparation for life, education is life itself, as John Dewey stated. The supplementary material I use are selected based on the student's needs, interests, and background.
