My comments on tutoring Desktop Publishing : My undergraduate degree is in Visual Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design and Photography.

My teaching philosophy starts out with essentialism which believes in a strong core curriculum and high academic standards. I believe it is important to have a strong foundation on which to build upon. After ensuring a strong foundation I tend to lean more towards progressivism. I believe students should be taught what is relevant today while becoming more independent learners, by utilizing problem solving skills and critical thinking. I teach the foundation and build upon that based upon what is relevant in a particular field today. I also include student-centered teaching strategies. I believe in order to learn a student must have base knowledge of a subject that leads into hands on assignments which require mastery of a subject. The method of teaching I prefer is maieutic, i.e., one which draws knowledge from the student, rather than attempts to place it in him/her from without. To me, the process of asking questions and allowing the student's curiosity and intelligence to reach conclusions is far more effective than one-sided lecturing. I am endlessly creative, coming up with myriad examples to illustrate concepts.
In 2006 I taught graphic design topics at Westwood College. In 2007 I taught the same subject at The Creative Circus (roughly equivalent to an MBA program for designers, writers, photographers, and art directors). In 2008 I taught in the design department for Georgia State University. This summer I traveled to a remote region in India to teach English. A Little Bit About Me...

For the past ten years I have worked in central Mexico. My responsibilities there included learning Spanish and teaching by lecturing, classes, home studies, and children's clubs. I love to teach children and adults who are motivated to learn. In Mexico I have taught English to those wanting to learn the language. I have a good understanding of the Spanish language and can speak and write Spanish fluently. I also know English and computers very well. Before working in Mexico, I worked as the Computer Department Manager for over eight years, where I handled programming and computer maintenance. I am well acquainted with the Microsoft Office Suite since I had to teach the secretaries in the organization how to use it.
