A Little Bit About Me...

It is important for me to help students understand through real world examples. I do my best to develop training material and a learning environment that is relatable to their ultimate application. Much of the training I do requires initial "buy-in" ... if a student does not believe what they are learning will have application and benefit for them, they will not be open to learn. I try very hard to build this confidence up-front.

I student taught in a fourth grade classroom this past semester. The classroom consisted of 29 students. I taught all subjects and incorporated many hands on experiences with each subject. I have taught second, third, fourth, and sixth grades. I was a camp counselor for five summers. During this experience I lead a cabin of females for a week at a time. I will be living in Champaign, IL starting this August.
I have grown a desire to work with children since my camp counseling job in 2004. I have been giving many opportunities to work with children due to my college training for a degree in education. I have found the balance between being a friend and authoritative figure with children through all of my experiences with children. I will ask a student some questions to find out what they know about the subject. I listen carefully for clues to potential obstacles the student is facing. How the student feels about the subject is affected by perception of difficulty and personal ability, and by perception of importance. I want the student to gain a sense of accomplishment as early as possible in order to establish self-motivation. I work to establish in the student a base of knowledge or experience, and I teach the student how to use that as a springboard for learning further material and solving puzzles or resolving questions. Keeping the student aware of the larger context for the material is a constant habit as well.
