I Make Less Mess and More Message Out of Math

I have been teaching since I started college. I taught in the tutoring center at SIUE as a freshman. Since then I have taught a wide variety of classes at Lewis and Clark Community College and St. Louis Community College. I also have had students that I have tutored for many years until they moved off to college. Even then I sometimes was called for tutoring when they were back home. I also have helped with middle and high school math contest teams
I listen intently to what students ask to decipher their level of understanding. I wish for the students to truely understand and not merely mimic. Math is thinking. Too often I see people who at first are struggling with math treating it as a mimicing subject. Some repetitive practice is needed, but understanding prior to the repetition is better.

I believe that language is the passport that can help you travel and understand the other culture; Therefore, teaching a second language is very important. I believe that being patient and creative is the essence of teaching, and in order to create well educated students, I should give them an extra time to be fluent in reading, writing and speaking the language.
French is my second language which I read and write since I was in third grade. I have earned an Associate in Art from community college, and I'm working on my BA in French. As a student in UMSL university,I'm practicing my French daily which is contributing in expanding my knowledge about French culture. I also work on helping the kids learning French while I'm volunteer in God's Small World preschool. As a native speaker for the Arabic language, I believe that I'm able to teach students in a way that make them fluent in ... read more

Tutoring has been a somewhat informal yet ever-present aspect of both my collegiate life and professional career. While focusing on pursuing my civil engineering degree at Purdue University, I realized the value that peers with non-engineering degrees saw in my unique gifts with mathematics. Although I never pursued formal teaching certifications, I have worked with several people, both recently and in the past, to realize their full potential to understand both basic as well as advanced level mathematics concepts.

My comments on tutoring Algebra I : With a strong background in mathematics, I can easily assist students to learn algebra. I will make sure students have a strong foundation in earlier mathematical concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. in order to make the learning of new concepts easier. Most difficulties in math stem from the failure to master concepts from earlier grades that should be firmly in place. If these concepts are not well learned, the student is attempting to learn a very new concept in addition to relearning previously taught concepts! Sometimes it is necessary to reteach these crucial concepts to insure mastery before a student can be successful learning algebraic concepts.

I have taught for many decades and use a variety of teaching styles since all students learn differently. I am more of a 'traditional' style teacher, realizing that the basics are vital. I am a visual learner myself, but realize that my students may not. I always teach so that all students learn..using visual, hands on, and auditory presentation of material. I am extremely thorough and endeavor to be sure my students have mastered a concept before moving on to more complex topics. I ALWAYS make what I am teaching relevant to the students...showing them how they will use what we are learning in a real life situation. This not only makes it more interesting, but the students enjoy seeing real life situations in which they can use some of the more obscure topics such as fractions, etc. I make learning fun and exciting! Getting the students involved and active is a huge part of lea ... read more

CPA- available for most of accounting and math courses

Worked in a public accounting firm (Big4). I have been tutoring financial and managerial accounting at school for two years as a teaching assistant. My expertise is in accounting including EXCEL. I also have very strong mathematical skills. The strategies that I give to students in preparing for an exam seem to bring good results.
Instead of telling answers right away, I encourage students to think and help them think in the right direction. I also teach students strategies on how to study effectively.
