Calculus II is one of my top subjects!

I am a sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis studying biomedical engineering. I am a former Princeton Review ACT Teacher. This job taught me how to use the Socratic method to help students discover how to solve problems on their own. I used this experience as an ACT teacher to perfect my tutoring skills. I am currently a Math Mentor for Washington University students. I am looking to expand my tutoring opportunities.
I believe in using the Socratic method. This method is a powerful tutoring device because it allows students to come up with the answers on their own. This is key to developing a full understanding of the material.

Hidden Talents Tutoring

My tutoring style focuses on understanding concepts, not simply getting the right answers. This emphasis improves retention and helps students apply their knowledge to new problems. I teach a variety of memorization techniques, but if the student understands a process or formula, memorization is often unnecessary. Whenever possible, I use hands-on exercises, manipulatives, and exploration to help students visualize abstract concepts and discover principles for themselves. Rather than giving answers easily, I ask questions to lead the student in solving problems. I am patient and have a talent for explaining technical information to non-technical people. I love to learn, and when sharing that knowledge, my ultimate goal is to leave the student with a spark that will hopefully motivate them to pursue the subject above and beyond the lesson. Motivation, learning style, and goal structure are components I consider when setting up a lesson. As a computer programmer, I tend to be task oriented. I like to break a project into smaller chunks with clear boundaries. I believe that having the student participate in defining these goals helps them focus, keeps them from getting overwhelmed, and gives them a way to measure their own success. When in undergraduate school for physics I acted as a tutor for portions of my junior and senior years. I tutored students in general physics I & II, as well as calculus I & II. I would work with a particular student on a one on one basis to address specific questions that they might have on the subject matter.
I very much enjoy education and working with children/young adults. Teaching is something that can and should be performed in different ways depending on the student. Everybody has their own unique learning style. I believe in visual learning and working through example problems to help develop better understanding.
