A Little Bit About Me...

I am very enthusiastic about language learning, because I know understanding and utilizing language has the ability to influence learning across all subject matter. I am patient and methodical in analyzing the student's learning styles in order to identify the most effective and efficient presentation of the material. However, I am also confident that learning styles are co-dependent on teaching styles; therefore, I will not hesitate to introduce as many teaching methods as I see appropriate.
By earning a duel BA in Spanish and Linguistics and a MA in Applied Linguistics, I have spent an extensive amount of time researching teaching methods and learning styles pertaining to first and second language acquisition. I believe that a student who lacks the basic fundamental skills in reading and mathematics will struggle to stay focused in class and continually be disruptive and ultimately stop attending school. My teaching style is consistently accommodating especially to these types of students. I like to show students that I am there for them and there isn't anything through my patience and sincerity they cannot learn.
Over the past five years I have worked as a Teacher/Instructor both the the legal field and in the public school setting with students diagnosed as ED and LD as well as being displaced from the normal public school setting. Even though my academic degrees are in the legal field I have stayed current in areas of Reading and Math from Basic Algebra to Geometry.

A Little Bit About Me...

For the past ten years, I have been teaching High School English. I have taught grades 9-12 in Literature, Composition and Standards of Learning in preparation for the state exams. I have taught inclusion classes involving students with numerous learning styles and have always met and exceeded the expectations of their parents.
I am a very motivating person and tend to use humor as a method of teaching. I teach to and with the child and never down to him/her. I break large components into their simplest forms so that a child learns to take things one step at a time and not feel overwhelmed. I make the learning relevant to what the child is interested in or knows about so that he/she can be more engaged in the learning process. We set the goal-a reasonable one yet with high expectations and together we achieve it.

In the absence of the primary instructor I provide an enhanced learning environment with stimulating and thought provoking conversation. It is my sole purpose to maintain a structured and enjoyable environment for effective learning. I use a unique technique of incorporating visual, audio, and kinesthetic methods in an integrated approach. Additionally, I use a method of conceptual questioning, and analytical thinking skills. Furthermore, expanding the students grammar, diction, and word usage are all important in my tactics.

A Little Bit About Me...

Whether teaching my son to read, guiding elementary school students through a discussion of the water cycle, or assisting a classmate with a term paper, I always try to employ the Socratic method. I believe that one teaches by asking questions rather than by providing answers. Things learned by rote are easily forgotten. By asking questions, the instructor fully involves the students in the learning process. There is nothing so satisfying to me as seeing students progress under my tutelage.
Having been the top student in my senior class at Norfolk State University, I often assisted my classmates who had difficulties in writing papers. During my time as an undergraduate, I served as a long-term substitute teacher in the Portsmouth Public School system. I recieved my BA in English and graduated with a 3.97 grade point average. This fall, I will begin the Master's of Teaching program ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is more than a job for me, I really enjoy helping my students. I believe that all children have the ability and the desire to learn. Some students need a little more attention and enouragement. I enjoy getting to know my students so that I can find their strengths and weaknesses and build on them.
I began my experience teaching at a small school. I taught 7/8 grade general science, ninth grade earth and space science, and tenth grade biology. I worked at this school for two years, before relocating. I then worked with a tutoring service. I tutored elementary students in a private setting (in homes) in reading and math. I also taught seventh grade science at another small school.
