My comments on tutoring Anatomy : Human cadaver classes are spooky, but extremely helpful! I apply my experience from those to my philosophy of "know thy self" and "form and function" to make Anatomy relevant and memorable to my students. The side-effect is an A!

I have worked with a huge diversity of students and I find that students remember, relate, connect and understand metaphors, examples, and models best. So I tell my students stories about what they see in the world around them, relating lessons to the news, and showing examples that are so cool they cannot be forgotten! I love tutoring because my specialty is identifying the source of confusion a student might have in a given lesson and using my knowledge and experience to explain the science in a different way. This can include directing the students to a particular on-line resource and/or tool that can help them study outside of our tutoring time, which can save a dedicated student money in the long-run.
I have been teaching/tutoring students in life science for over 20 years, but it all started with my BA from UC Berkeley in Integrative Biology. At Berkeley I tutored/taugh ... read more

I am patient yet firm. My personal background in mathematics was fairly rigorous, so I always make my students show their work. As the subject material gets tougher, it becomes more critical to be able to check all stages of one's work. One of my math teachers gave me some sage advice: "Math teachers are lazy. We find the quickest and shortest route to a solution." I've taken this tongue-in-cheek wisdom to heart in my own way. While there is only one single solution for any math problem, there are infinitely elegant ways to arrive at that solution. I show my students different ways to solve problems because flexibility is key. Mathematics is a great way to keep one's thinking nimble and that can help throughout one's education.
I earned a degree in Applied Mathematics and have always been "the go to guy" when my friends high school aged kids need help with their math homework. I h ... read more

Before teaching, I worked as a Doctor specializing in Clinical Pathology, including Microbiology. In this work, I studied in-depth the characteristics and life cycles of different microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, protozoan, and fungi, and performed culture and sensitivity testing of the microorganisms. With my experience in the Clinical Pathology Training Program for 4 years, I decided to teach a Microbiology class, including laboratory, at Lorma Colleges in the Philippines. In this profession, I discovered my true passion: to demystify the perception of Microbiology as being difficult and uninteresting and to teach it as an appealing, fascinating subject.
As a former instructor in Microbiology for 3 years, I know the importance of being innovative in teaching in order for students to grasp seemingly complicated topics. Not only did I prepare lesson plans and lectu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My love of teaching is stimulated most when working with students who require the most assistance. Through my study in Educational Psychology, I have learned that all students have their own learning styles; I am able to quickly recognize students' learning styles and fashion my teaching style to what works best for each student. I employ a great deal of Vygotsky's research when teaching; that is to say that I fully understand Vygotsky's notion of how students' learning curves require a variety of sources to pull from such as media, books, music, and other people with whom to discuss their learning experiences.
My doctoral dissertation examined college-level remedial reading and writing students in an effort to determine if adding online instruction to traditional instruction would improve student performance. My dissertation explored five hypotheses, and I found statistical signif ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My number one goal in teaching has always been to improve the students approach and mentality. All most every student I have tutored had the hidden, raw talent to succeed in school, but either lacked the desire or the vision to do so. I want students to see problems and concepts like how I do. I want them to be able to see all the options when tackling a tough Math problem or see all the implications when considering cell organelles. I also teach them that they have to mentally prepare themselves to be in it for the long run. I teach them how to plan, so they don't burn out by the time finals come up. I graduated UCB with a 3.9 and everything I teach I practice myself.
As a pre-med at UC Berkeley, I have a vast experience with in the basic sciences. I fell in love with Molecular Biology because of how integrated the field was. Everything was connected in some way or another. To com ... read more

As a high school student, I tutored my peers in French, drawing on my life-long use of the language to help others understand the intricacies of conjugation and word order. Now, as a college student, I am continuing my study of French to coordinate the dialect I learned at home with the formal use of the language. My tutoring experience in reading includes work with students at Mountain View Elementary School in Concord. There, I met with students who were struggling with reading at their grade level and helped them with pronunciation and comprehension. As a health educator, I am well-versed in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and pathology.
I prefer to teach not through rote memorization or lengthy lectures, but through participatory experiences. Following the theory that some people are audio learners, some are visual learners, and some are kinesthetic (doing) learners, I lik ... read more

My "teaching style" changes depending on the needs of my students. In all cases, an initial assessment of both the academic level and the temperament of each student are necessary before I establish a particular style. Some students are comfortable with a quieter, more formal tutor, while others are successful with a more casual, animated tutor. In every situation, I look for opportunities to give positive reinforcement. For example, I usually warm-up with material the student feels relatively confident about, then add new or more challenging concepts, and end with the student feeling successful practicing on his or her own.
I have enjoyed teaching and tutoring a wide range of students in a vast array of different settings. Most recently, I have tutored reading to 4th graders at an elementary school, taught ESL and GED subjects to adults through an adult education center, an ... read more

I am very much focused on teaching concepts and then ensuring that practical examples are worked to make sure the concepts are understood and applied. My style is to emphasize understanding the underlying concepts and logic that drive the subject matter. Once understood I like to use exercises and problems to apply these concepts and make sured how they are applied is well understood and the student can arrive at correct solutions.
