Wanting to teach is the major reason I got my PhD. I've always had a love of learning, and want to be able to share that with students. It is important to understand that all students are different and no one approach will work for all students. In my experience teaching both as a lecturer and on an individual basis, when dealing with a student one-on-one, the student and the tutor need to be equal partners in the session. The focus needs to be on what the student is having trouble with and the tutor acting as a guide. During my year as a senior accountant at a public accounting firm, I found that I really enjoyed mentoring the staff accountants I had working for me. I found that the easiest way of learning something new was by actually going ahead and trying it first. However, the theory behind the problems matters just as much as the end result. If you understand the theory, then you can complete any problem.
I graduated from the Honors program at Chico State and have always taken education very seriously. Since then, I spent 3 years in Public Accounting, of which one year I was a senior accountant and mentored 3-5 staff accountants. I left public accounting about a year and a half ago in order to be able to study for my C.P.A. license which I now have.
