A Little Bit About Me...

I would like to get to know the person(s) that I am tutoring before we begin work. I want them to be comfortable around me and to be able to ask me any qestion with no hestations. I like to balance out their strengths and weaknesses so the learner won't get discouraged when facing something new.
I am a current high school student. I am completely and have completed Honors and AP courses in Math, Science, English, Social Studies, and Language. I have previously tutored students in my grade level, lower grade levels, higher grade levels, and even college students. I have maintained A's in a majority of my classes, except Geometry in which i recieved a B. I am very understanding and flexible in the concepts of these subjects.

Latin is one of my top subjects! I have over 20 years of experience teaching Latin, both on the college level, high school, and middle school. I have a B.A. in Latin and French from UNC-Chapel Hill and an M.A. in Classics (Greek and Latin) from Florida State University. I am very experienced in the classroom and am told that my explanations are second to none. I do my utmost to get students to grasp what I am teaching. I am very patient with students and cannot help but add a little humor to the classroom.

I have taught all subjects mentioned for a period of over 25 years, both in the United States and Japan. I received a teacher award in Japan for excellence in teaching. My own previous students endorse me as a good, or even great, teacher. As for subjects, I prepared teachers in international schools to teach AP Latin. I taught TOEFL at more than one level to college students in Japan who were seeking to study in the United States as well.
I have a very relaxed style of teaching. Not so relaxed that there is not order in the classroom, but a style designed to put students at ease and to put them into a mood for learning. I encourage participation, active participation in class, and I encourage questions. I seek to explain so that students understand perfectly, and I will not give up until I am convinced that all have a grasp of the subject that I am teaching.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is simple. As it has not been professionally nurtured I have taken my ques from those I have taught. It is simply to provide what is needed. I prefer to spend time with a student and learn what works for them. I believe trial of multiple styles to find success is critical to each student. Additionally, there is nothing wrong with having fun while you learn!
As the child of a school system administrative professional, I have always spent extra time in the school environment. As a high school freshman I began to tutor elementary school students based on the needs highlighted by their teachers. I spent a lot of time working one on one with English as a secound language students. I assisted with their writting, reading, and basic math skills. Additionally I work particularly well with withdrawn children who need special attention.

A Little Bit About Me...

Successfully earning both my Bachelor's and my Master's, Magna cum Laude, from reputable universities only dimly begins to communicate my passion for learning and for teaching. Further, my experience has developed competencies in oral and written communication, social sciences and humanities, religion and culture, and foreign languages, most notably Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Finally, the opportunities to teach and tutor for four years included two years of teaching classical languages and two years of tutoring middle and high school students in language arts, social studies, and foreign languages.

As a Peer Tutor of Greek and Latin at UNC Asheville from 2008-2010, I led weekly tutoring sessions for groups of students in introductory and intermediate Greek and Latin. While I developed my own understanding of Greek, Latin and English grammar during this appointment, I gained an even greater understanding of the way different students learn and the means necessary to drive them to success. During my undergraduate career, I also pursued a variety of independent opportunities to help other develop their reading and writing skills.
I hope to instill in my students a sense of individual responsibility by treating them with a shared level of mutual respect and trust. It inspires me to see students learn inductively, not through repeated lecturing, allowing them to develop the skills necessary to succeed outside of the classroom. I believe that anyone can learn what they wish with t ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Being a student at UNC Chapel Hill has challenged and inspired me to think creatively and achieve excellence in all areas of academia. As a senior at Carolina I will graduate in the spring of 2012 with a BS in Biology and a minor in Chemistry—providing a thorough understanding of science. I have grammatical expertise and writing skills due to extensive research and refutation papers, and laboratory reports and essays throughout my undergraduate education. In the last several years I have tutored elementary reading and writing at the 1st-3rd grade levels working with underprivileged children. I have tutored general chemistry during my senior year in high school to honors students, and continue to tutor college students in chemistry today.
I enjoy working with children of all age ranges, and it is my personal goal to make learning a difficult subject less of a chore. I believe that h ... read more

Here is Some Good Information About Latin Tutoring

Latin is taught as a mandatory subject in gymnasium and other so-called classical high schools, located chiefly in Europe. In the United States, although once offered nearly universally, Latin is limited to elective status in a steadily declining number of grade schools, both public and private. Select a tutor today. Latin is an Italic language originally spoken in Latium and Ancient Rome. It, along with most European languages, is a descendant of the Ancient Proto-Indo-European language. Although it is often considered a dead language, a number of scholars and members of the Christian clergy speak it fluently, and both University of Kentucky and Iowa State (among others) teach it.
