I have danced since the age of five. From the age of fifteen until the start of my college career I competed nationally in jazz and tap dance. . I also worked professionally as a dancer for Theatre West Virginia. Since completing my Dance degree from UNC-Greensboro I have concentrated primarily on modern dance techniques, yoga, choreography, and performance.

My comments on tutoring Drama : I began acting while in high school and have multiple stage credits to my name, both in school and community productions. Most of my experience with musical theater (I have voice training as well) and comedy, but I can offer assistance with all forms of drama and acting (line memorization and delivery, stage instruction, stage presence, etc...).

I have a degree in English and Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and have two years experience writing for the Daily Tar Heel. I have also completed internships with the local NPR station, WUNC, and with the organization AGRADU (Advocates for Grassroots Development in Uganda). I am highly organized, responsible, and driven, and am very personable. I work well with children and young adults; I am the oldest of five children and during high school and college, I worked as a dance teacher and nanny. I'm currently working on publishing my first novel.
I am a patient and understanding teacher. I enjoy fostering close relationships with my students so that I can cultivate my methods to best suit their learning style.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children. I've taught acting at the Durham Arts Council for three years. The duties from that position included directing students in performances which I helped them create. The plays were written around themes chosen by the camp director. So, in essence, the children and I would research those themes and develop stories which I would then turn into plays using my expertise. Those plays would be performed every two weeks for the entire summer. I was responsible for preparing three classes for this project simultaneously.
From my experiences teaching acting in Durham NC I know education can I know that learning can be fun. I hold a Bachelor's from UNC Greensboro where I majored in Psychology and theater arts, but also took many literature credits to fulfill a special educational program in which I was placed. this program was for gifted students. I loved teaching since my first teaching experience in 1974 that iinvolved working as a long-term substitute at the Omega School in Madison, Wisconsin. The Omega School, an alternative hiigh school that occupied a few rooms in an an old office buiilding, helped high risk students who couldn't fit into a regular high school environment obtain their GED. Some students were gifted but unable to adjust to the regimens of regular high school. Others stole cars or acted out in other ways. My next teachiing experience was in 1975 as a teaching assistant at the University of California, Irvine. T.A.'s taught their own classes and were responsible for lectures, grading, assignments. I taught composition and literature. I loved it and felt at home. My supervisor, now a professor at Duke, told me I was a "natural teacher." I've been teaching ever since. I've taught journalism, science writing, huma ... read more

For the past two years, I was the high school English teacher in a small, rural Alaskan village located on the Yukon River. This teaching position was very challenging--I had to teach several subjects, such as English, social studies, geography, art, keyboarding, drama, journalism, and digital photography. Since the high school was so small, (30 students), much of my teaching was one-on-one instruction. I have strong English skills, as well as a minor in history and a diverse liberal arts undergraduate education. Currently I am working on my Masters of Education degree, through a distance education program.
I feel very passionate about education and learning. I think the key to teaching is to engage students, and make content interesting and relevant to their lives. I truly believe that the ideal teaching situation is via one-on-one instruction, because I feel students unders ... read more

As the child of a school system administrative professional, I have always spent extra time in the school environment. As a high school freshman I began to tutor elementary school students based on the needs highlighted by their teachers. I spent a lot of time working one on one with English as a secound language students. I assisted with their writting, reading, and basic math skills. Additionally I work particularly well with withdrawn children who need special attention.
My teaching style is simple. As it has not been professionally nurtured I have taken my ques from those I have taught. It is simply to provide what is needed. I prefer to spend time with a student and learn what works for them. I believe trial of multiple styles to find success is critical to each student. Additionally, there is nothing wrong with having fun while you learn!

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Theater Arts Educator, I have worn many hats. It never ceases to amaze me that each lesson I prepare for my theater classes also includes a grammar, math, science and history lesson too! Teaching is more than passing on information. It is a dynamic process of inspiring a love for learning and equipping students with the tools to learn successfully. It is important to provide students with structure, engaging activities and lessons, and opportunities to integrate and synthesize that which they are learning into 'real-life' experiences. Also, I know each student learns differently, thus I am prepared to vary my approach to meet the needs of each student. I am confident in each student's ability to learn and be successful, and I am committed to achieving those goals.

I believe that any child can learn and that we all have various learning styles. We just have to find the style that is best for optimum learning. Some of us are visual learners and some are auditory learners, and many of us learn with a combination of styles. I believe that by working with students to finding their unique and individual learning style a tutor is the most effective.
