I have had a variety of teaching experiences since graduating from a small teacher’s college with strict requirements. I have taught geography, physical education, piano, keyboarding, and coached high school sports. Hard work and dedication led to success in my coaching career with a runner-up state title in girls’ basketball. I mention this because it shows I have a good rapport with students as I am able to motivate and set goals successfully. I also have taught all subjects in a one-room suburban school, grades 1-8. I believe that teaching styles need to be flexible to the student. I have worked with a very wide variety of students, from the severely limited autistic youth to the highly gifted medical student. While approach and focus might vary for the individual or subject matter the essence remains the same. I try to envision at least 3 different ways of approaching a problem, I discuss material but let the students ask questions which I then tailor my explanations toward. Everyone sees a problem slightly differently and if you allow yourself an open mind and creative thinking often you can help them break through a difficult problem because you are able to see it their way. In addition to tutoring in my home for fifteen years, I received a Summa Cum Laude for the quality of my Master's Thesis in Creative Writing, and was the only student ever to be asked to serve as the Interim Director of the Cleveland State Writing Center. Every student is different; some require more help than others. As a teacher I have to find the best way for the child to learn. I want learning to be constructive, but also fun. I have discovered through years of education, that the amount of enthusiasm from an educator can make a huge difference. Therefore as an educator, I need to be patient and always encouraging. Adding details, examples, and stories to a study subject can help many students mentally see what I’m trying to teach.
