A Little Bit About Me...

I have always helped people with their homework, particularly in when it comes to English and elementary math. I worked for wyzant.com for four months, where I tutored a little girl in Spanish and it was really fun, but ultimately she had too much on her plate so I stopped. A year later the father of the girl I tutored before asked me to come back, but by then I had a full-time job and school. Now I would like to go back to tutoring because its something I enjoy and I am also good at it.
I like to make learning fun by teaching according to what my students like. For instance, with the little girl I tutored, I knew that she was a visual learner and that she loved art and music so I gave her a mnemonic device in a form a song she liked to help her remember verb conjugations. I also made flashcards for her to remember fruits and vegetables as well as articles of clothing. I will make ... read more

I have a passion and calling for working with children. From the time I was a child, I knew this is what I was meant to do. I believe children are the hope of our country, and that every child is capable of learning and expanding their knowledge. Knowledge is power, and if a child is given the proper encouragement and motivation they can and will succeed. I consider it an amazing privilege to be an educator and make a difference in the lives of my students.
Throughout my college years I have been employed by two different after school programs for a combined amount of 6 years tutoring/teaching in public school after school programs. (Grades K-6) I also spent 2 months teaching full time 3rd and 4th grade after college prior to unfortunately being laid off due to financial losses in the school. I also tutored English in college through an Advanced English class I was placed in.

My teaching style involves a positive approach. I believe students learn best in an environment that is both positive and challenging. Positive feedback is essential because students are encouraged to take risks and solve problems. A challenging classroom teaches critical thinking skills that are necessary for the global market.

I am a California State University, Los Angeles graduate, holding a BA in English, with a specific focus on clasroom teaching. As a nanny, I have several years experience teaching small children to read. I am also well versed in theatre arts, dance, and world history.
I believe that an open dialogue is a teacher's most needed resource. Any child needs to feel as though he or she can express concerns or apprehensions without the fear of feeling embarrassed or stupid. I truly believe that there is no such thing as a stupid question. Teaching should, of course, relay necessary information, but it should also foster a student's drive to succeed, as well as the knowledge that any goal can be reached through ... read more
