I knew I wanted to teach at grade 5. All my education from that time on was directed to become a teacher. During my graduate work at the University of Oregon I majored in Reading. For thirteen years I was the Program Director of a scientifically proven, direct instruction, reading tutoring program for below grade level readers in 4 Seattle elementary schools. We tutored up to 210 students daily. My program was approved by the State of Washington as an SES program for failing schools, which I directed for one year. I also taught an after school class in reading for K-1 children. For two summers I worked with a non-profit, first as a literacy program manager and then as the reading lab director, again tutoring over 150 K-6 students daily.

The reason I chose to go to school for my teaching certificate is that I've always been passionate about learning. I think the best teachers are excited to constantly learn new things.
