Special Education Teacher

Focus on direct instruction based on needs assessment and data driven evaluation as needed.
As a current student studying special education and literacy instruction, I have had the opportunity to learn the newest and most recently researched "best practices" in teaching. I am currently certified in Special Education. My teaching experience has been significantly enhanced by my experience as a mother of a ten year old with special needs. I believe in creating a positive, professional atmosphere in a tutoring setting. I assess students based on specific needs expressed (by the student, parent, and/or teachers) and plan my instruction based on the data provided in assessment. I use researched methods in my instruction with a focus on direct instruction, modeling, guided practice, and continuous informal assessment. My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Orton Gillingham Certified Dyslexia Tutor

I am a reading tutor certified in the Orton Gillingham approach of treating dyslexia. I completed the initial Orton Gillingham certification program through the IMSLEC/Chidlren's Dyslexia Center. My training included 45 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of practicum. The Orton Gillingham approach is widely used for individuals who have difficulties with reading, writing, and spelling. The approach is multi-sensory, structured and sequenced, explicit, cumulative, diagnostic, and prescriptive. Previously, I graduated from Ohio State University with a Master's degree in Teaching ESL K-12. I have five years of teaching experience.

I have been a working graphic designer for most of my life after graduation from Ohio State. After 12 years of design I was asked to participate in an art and education program at Chicago Public Schools Autism Program. I was hired on the spot and then continued with education by obtaining a masters degree in special education in Tempe Arizona. In Arizona I was assigned as an inclusion teacher for 9, 10 11th grade English. I had to accommodate diverse learners and plan instruction. I hold a valid Arizona Cross Catagorical Special Education Certificate that expires August 2013
I can identify students problems in learning and can accommodate and modify curriculum so diverse learning can understand grade level state standards. Each student will have a unique set of circumstances that make their learning style different. I am adept at finding that learning style or block to le ... read more

Since high school I have been aware that I wanted to teach. I am currently pursueing a Masters of Education, and finishing one of my specializations, (French). I have taught for several businesses. I also taught for the Worthington Public School system as a volunteer and teaching asssistant.
I try to devote the day to getting kids interested in learning while covering the topics necessary. I cater to each child's needs and abilities and try to use their strength's to help their weaknesses. For example when teaching foreign language, if a child is not as strong in language as they are in math, I try to use formulas to portray language in a more concrete manner. I enjoy working with children of all ages and find that they enjoy working with me due to the enthusiasm I show them.
