"Children are the world's most valuable resource" - JFK

Working with children always has been and always will be a passion of mine. Prior to deciding that I would focus my attention on becoming a child psychologist I contemplated following in the footsteps of a number of my most influential role models: teachers. In my eyes, there's both a monumental responsibility and a fulfillment beyond words when you have been entrusted to educate our youth. While some may choose to see teaching as an insurmountable challenge, I see it as an unparalleled opportunity to do my part to better the lives of others, and an opportunity that I have taken advantage of countless times. In addition to tutoring algebra in my past, I have had the pleasure of serving as a summer camp counselor, an after-school activity facilitator, a pediatrics unit volunteer and a number of other child-based positions, many of which have taken place in the Madison area. I hope that yo ... read more

Certified Teacher Looking To Help Others As A Tutor

I have a wide variety of educational experience and have recently crossed over into the realm of education as a Special Education/At-Risk teacher with the Edgerton School District. My current position has me utilizing differentiated instruction and modification techniques with nearly 50 students throughout the day which will enhance my ability to tutor others who need help. My particular areas of expertise are Social Studies, Spanish, English and ASVAB/GED test prep. I am weaker in Math and Science.
I prefer to have materials prepared prior to any tutoring session so communication ahead of time will be essential. If I have an idea of what is expected of me then I am able to help modify the session to fit the learner. I like to use both direct teach as well as discussion to help guide the tutoring session.

I help students to think.

I am an interactive teacher, and I believe in step by step instructions when needed. Most importantly, I believe in the power of clear thinking combined with creative thinking. My degree is in secondary education with a minor in philosophy and a major in English.
I taught English for 40 years and am now recently retired. I taught English overseas while in the US Peace Corps, 1969-71. I taught English at MATC for two years. Specializing in discovering how student best learns. Open Ended Questions, Focus on Strength while pinpointing areas of weakness to correct and strengthen areas of concern. Teach child as a whole person understanding we need trust and confidence to truly reach our potential. STUDENTS HAVE TROUBLE LEARNING WHEN TRUST BREAKS DOWN AND THEY ARE AFRAID TO EXPOSE WEAKNESSES OR ASK QUESTIONS. To me, this is the key to success--trust in a safe and challenging and FUN learning environment wheee mistakes are treated as paramount to learning, not as hindrances.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a passion for learning and I always make sure that people around me also discover it in themselves. That is the the reason why I am constantly around learning activities. I have been a tutor many times in various settings. I am at present a Level 2 coach in Track and Field from the USATF organization. I enjoy coaching since it is closely related to teaching. English is my favorite subject. I also tutored French for 4 to 5 years.
I try to understand the student first. Then I try to bring him/her to discover what I am trying to teach. I am patient and respectful of their personalities. My style is participatory, democratic. Together with the students we discover the meanings of what we are learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

First, I am a life long learner and love reading. I have a masters in Library Science and have worked for the past 2 years as a reference librarian where I frequently answered questions, worked with patrons one on one, taught ACT prep and computer classes. Previous to working at the public library, I volunteered tutoring elementary and high school students in grammar, composition, and mathematics.
I enjoy helping people find and understand information. When teaching, I like to encourage my students to find their own path and reasoning to the answer. I encourage supervised and structured trial and error where the student tries different methods to finding the answer. This nurtures the excitement of discovery and the joy of learning something new.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned two bachelor degrees from the University of Wisconsin: a BA in History and a BA in Political Science. I thoroughly enjoy both subjects and continue to deepen my knowledge of both in ongoing private study. In the past I have tutored students in music, mathematics, and English and feel capable of tutoring in any of the social sciences.
I believe the most important key to teaching is having a passionate teacher. When a student has a teacher who is interested in the subject matter, they cannot help but be interested too. In regards to my favorite subject, history, I believe it is best taught by focusing on the ‘story’ aspect of it. When a student can learn the over-arching narrative and hear the inspiring stories of the men and women who have made history, the dates and details will readily follow. I believe each student learns differently and a teacher needs both p ... read more
