I am currently in my last year of undergraduate work in mathematics at UMKC. I have been an informal math tutor for numerous students in the last few years. Last semester I worked for the UMKC Physics department as a lab assistant for graduate students, and did physics tutoring. I can usually find a way to relate the material that the student is struggling with to something else that they understand. When they can make connections to more familiar things, then they can think themselves through problems more effectively. I usually achieve this by showing them how to do a problem, doing a problem or two with them, and then having them do problems on their own, only assisting when they need it.
