I have been working as a tutor at the college level throughout my college experience. I worked both for the local community college and for my self as a private tutor. I earned two bachelor degrees, a BS in chemistry with an emphasis in physical chemistry, and a BS in math with an emphasis in applied mathematics. I love watching the face of a child when they realize that they have mastered a word that previously eluded them. When I tutor a child in reading, I will ask them questions about what they like to learn or how they like to have the teacher teach them and then base my tutoring off their answers. This way, the child feels involved in the process as well as gains the knowledge in a manner that feels correct for them to learn. I have had much success with tutoring children this way. I love the chance to make a child a reader.
Since I was a young girl, the English language has been as important to me as breathing. I have had a variety of experiences as a teacher. I, at first, worked as a substitute for about 3 years. Then I worked as a 3rd-grade teacher in a private school for one year. Because of enrollment that position was cut. I went back to subbing for a time. From 2004-2009 I have worked for the Dallas School District as a personal tutor. I primarily worked with middle school-high school students. I tutored them both at home and at a computer lab on an internet program. That position was cut because of budget cuts. I am able to tutor in all basic subjects.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching. Working with a student one-to-one or even in small groups allows a student to have their individual needs met. Tutoring has the advantage of catching the student where they are struggling to comprehend. I am patient, creative, and prefer to model examples for my students. I believe that a strong foundation in the basics will help a student grasp more difficult concepts. I have always preferred an interactive teaching style. At times in Mongolia I found the language barrier to be inhibiting the learning of the students. This caused me to explore different teaching methods which I otherwise would have never considered. For example, I often chose to teach language by acting out the word or phrase, or having a student act it out. However, there were some classes that were not responsive to this type of teaching and, as a result I resorted to what I had previously considered arcane and authoritarian: repetitious call and response, and by rote. These methods proved to be effective for certain classes. As a result, I am now open to any possible number of teaching methods.
