I have enjoyed the personal gratification of tutoring since high school. Since I was 15 years old, I have shared my knowledge and love of mathematics with people of all ages. I attended Spelman College and Georgia Institute of Technology, where I received my Bachelor of Science in both Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. I also tutored my peers at these institutions. My comments on tutoring SAT - Math : Passed virtual testing.

I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects like Economics. It’s important to be able to impart knowledge to the student smoothly and only to answer the asked questions. Too much information can cause a student to “overload”. This can make the student afraid to ask questions in the future or to think that the topic is so difficult. A good tutor will try to simplify things and brief the answers so he keeps the child interested to learn more.

I find in counseling I have to lead people to come up with their own solutions without telling them the answer. This involves showing them how to get there and teaching them the skills. If any of my friends or coworkers would describe me it would be as a patient person. I think it takes a lot of patience to tutor especially if the student is having trouble grasping a concept. You have to be creative in how you explain it to them. Everyone has a different learning style whether it is audio or visual. I think it’s important the student feels comfortable to voice frustration and ask to go over something again.

From my time with English Club, I found there is very little advantage for either party when the teacher is draconian. Giving the student little rewards, plenty of encouragement, and being patient work much better. I like to try to understand the student on a personal level, so I can make him or her comfortable. Does the student prefer an informal session or to work hard the entire time? Will jokes encourage or distract? Questions like these are key to creating the best learning environment.
