ORTON-Gilingham multi sensory approach. Math without words until the concept is mastered. Using lots of manipulatives including video games, that teach concepts.
I Have worked for the Davis County School district for 12 years. The last few years I have been working intervention for students who are not performing at grade level. I have learned that not all kids can learn the way they are taught in school. My 8 year old is dyslexic. I Have studied the Orton-Gilingham multisensory approach to reading and spelling. My teaching style varies depending on the type of students I am teaching to because I believe that each student has a particular learning style that they find easier. I think that it is important to find the types of learning that each student finds easiest to understand, and tailor the course so that it works well with their particular learning abilities. This can easily be done in a classroom setting as well as an individual basis. In either case, while I am teaching I think that it is important to understand the topic we are on before moving to the next one. My teaching style might be a bit unorthodox but it is something I have acquired from past teachers and tutors. I have not helped or tutored in a while but I believe I have an easy and simple approach to it. When it comes to physics and chemistry, the math can be learned over night, the concepts are most critical. You can't read a problem and interpret the question word for word. You have to find a way to relate it to real life and what you see everyday. A spinning disk becomes a truck tire, a sound device becomes a sub woofer. Things that you can relate to.
