ORTON-Gilingham multi sensory approach. Math without words until the concept is mastered. Using lots of manipulatives including video games, that teach concepts.
I Have worked for the Davis County School district for 12 years. The last few years I have been working intervention for students who are not performing at grade level. I have learned that not all kids can learn the way they are taught in school. My 8 year old is dyslexic. I Have studied the Orton-Gilingham multisensory approach to reading and spelling. A Little Bit About Me...

I think patience and coaching are the most important tools in tutoring. Based on my experience, a rule or lesson is better retained if the student is vested in the answer by their own efforts. That being said, I like to give the tool, the hint, or the rule before I ever just give an answer: that way the student has an opportunity to learn the rule or remember the process for themselves while they figure out the answer. I would never, however, let a student stew in frustration if they could not come up with an answer on their own as that only puts up blockers and hinders learning.

My direct experience is with adult learners. In my current position at USA TODAY, one of the largest newspapers in the country, I am heavily involved with technology training. Not only do I work with developing new training materials (from PowerPoint to video to documentation), I also do live classroom training.
