Math Can be Fun!

I have been tutoring in mathematics from basic elementary math to Calculus I for the last 10 years. I currently work as a tutor at Gulf Coast State College where I am familiarized with the material and common questions daily. I also offer freelance tutoring for students of all ages.
My teaching style is for the student to be methodical with their work and identify key words. I offer correction but also like to be patient to truly understand which part gives the student a struggle.

The Heart of Mathematics

25 years teaching various age groups in mathematics, fitness and martial arts Math subjects include algebra, statistics, calculus, trigonometry, logic, discrete math; I can tutor any math subject in K - Junior year of college. When students turn to tutoring, they often allow the tutor to do their thinking. This is counter productive to learning. A tutor is a coach, as well as, someome who shares their knowledge and skills. Learning math requires building neuro network connections in the brain. Anyone can learn math, at any age, but just like exercise, the mental muscle must be built with hard work. Learning how to learn sometimes is the first step. I take a diagnostic approach to tutoring. It does no good tutoring algebra is a student doesn't understand numbers and arithmetic. Likewise, a student must have a working knowledge of algebra before they can be successful in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all students deserve an excellent education. I think that parents and teachers need to be role models for students. Although I am very detail oriented and organized, I have learned how important it is to be flexible. It is also necessary to appeal to different learning styles and to use different teaching techniques. In addition, I believe that it is important to have high expectations for myself and my students. Lastly, I hope to instill a sense of fun and excitement when it comes to learning and I look forward to helping all students achieve their potential.

As a student of psychology, I have always been interested in using my knowledge to help others improve themselves. My experience teaching academic subjects is fairly limited, however, for the past four years I have volunteered as an assistant instructor at my martial arts school whenever my sensei has needed the help, which has given me ample opportunity to work on my teaching techniques with a wide variety of students. Currently I am working with a group of younger children on their advanced self-defense techniques, however I have worked with older children, teenagers and adults in the past.
I've always enjoyed the opportunity to explain things I'm familiar with to people who need it explained. That said, I prefer a teaching environment in which the student has the opportunity to discuss the subject, and I like to keep examples practical if at all possible. I approach teaching in a way that is very versatile and I am willing to adapt to accommodate a variety of learning styles. In general however I tend to back up and work on the material that the student already is familiar and comfortable with. Once some review on the known material has been done I like to begin moving toward the material that is currently being reviewed. The length of time spent in the "review phase" is completely dependent on the student's current situation. Some situations might require a mere problem or two in this phase, while others might require additional time understanding the fundamentals before moving to the more complex current problems.

I have always enjoyed teaching and working with students. I believe a teacher must demonstrate patience and be flexible to the student's abilities. I have seen first hand what can happen if a teacher takes an interest in a child's education. I worked as a scout leader at a church in Pensacola. Most of the children were inner city kids who had very little parental involvement. Once the kids saw someone cared and spent time with them, they worked even harder to learn the material and were very successful. I believe a teacher can have the same impact. I am always available by phone if your child is struggling with a topic. I am a patient, easy going person that will allow a child to meet their potential.

Today's students are tomorrow's leaders. That is why I am highly motivated to pass on as much knowledge as I can to as many students as I can. I do realize that all students learn differently. That is why my teaching style is one of patience. I will help a student out as long as it takes. I won't give up. I also try to create a comfortable learning environment. No one can learn if they are uptight or scared. Because kids will be kids, I sometimes have to be "hard", but I am never "mean". If given the right opportunities and mentorship, all students can have unlimited potential in life.

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my education experience, I was taught that whole learning is the best form of education. An education is not just gained through books; every life experience is capable of teaching a child. Math can be taught through books, games or even by counting the number of sprinkles on their sundae. Science can be taught by explaining why the cloud is in the sky and why it is raining. My experience has taught me that each child is different and how they learn is different. Each experience must be tailored to each child and when accomplished the child will excel. This is not always easy, but the reward of seeing that moment of comprehension in a child’s eyes is worth the effort!
