I have gained a solid understanding of many disciplines of math and science through my study of Physics. I have honed my writing and general English skills through the writing of laboratory reports, essays, and the completion of a thesis project. I have more than six years of experience tutoring students in math, science, history, and English.
I try to guide the student to find a personal understanding of the concept. It is one thing to explain a point of difficulty to the student, but it is preferable for the student to be led to an intuitive understanding. I have always wanted to teach. When I was a child I would round up the kids in my neighborhood and make them do lessons that I created. I do remember they did not like that. I went to college and earned a BS in Biology always knowing that I would eventually teach the sciences. I was an excellent student and have always found pride in myself on my ability to communicate with clearity. I have one year of tutoring experience at the k-12 level. I work hard at finding a way to connect with the student. This requires that I stay aware of the hints that the student is transmitting so that I can present the material in a manner that the student can proclaim "I've got it". I also work with the student to solve problems. Another approach I use is to never answer a question directly. I always ask them questions in a manner that allows them to be guided to the answer. This builds their self confidence and allows them think thru the process to get at the answer and it helps them to take ownership of the content.
