My comments on tutoring Piano : Lessons and tutoring available to beginning and intermediate level students. I have a B.Mus. in Piano from Houghton College and have strong experience with classical music and limited experience with other styles of keyboard playing.

My comments on tutoring Piano : I don't have much experience teaching young children, but I love music and am willing to help any age.

Everyone absorbs knowledge differently so it is important to cater to each student's particular needs. I am a very hands-on learner and I feel that is the best way to be taught, especially outside of a classroom setting. By getting the body involved in the learning process, the mind is kept stimulated.
I have helped tutor since I was a freshman in high school. I began working with kindergarteners through third grade students on reading and writing. Throughout my sophomore year of high school I tutored middle school math students (ages 11-14) and helped to train our "Mathalon" team. My junior and senior years of high school I mostly helped biology students prepare for the regents exams, as well as continued in the after school reading program for kindergarteners and preschoolers. All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.

I try to involve as many senses as I can when illustrating new concepts and ideas. Math manipulatives are essential elements for early math comprehension. Whenever a game can help solidify ideas, it is utilized and learning is always fun. Children reach benchmarks, such as reading independently and math computation at different rates, so it's important to be consistent but very patient and encouraging. A solid reading foundation is the greatest gift our children can receive. Comprehension is a key factor to understanding any subject at all.
