Teaching comes naturally to me in that I love to work with people (i.e. my professional career) and I love to encourage and inspire others to advance their lives through education. I create a comfortable atmosphere for students so that their stress level is reduced and they are able to focus on learning. At the same time, I make lessons fun yet serious. I have wanted to teach since I was in second grade, and am currently working toward my license in Massachusetts. I believe that knowledge is an intimate thing, and that learning should be fun, and confidence-building. I use eliciting techniques, bringing student knowledge to the table first, and then build upon it. Knowing a student is important for preparing relevant materials for class. I believe technology is an important tool that can enhance the learning process when implemented appropriately. My Zen professor in college taught our class that in order to be a good teacher, one must be a good student. I strive to embody that principle.

I have a relaxed teaching style that makes my students feel comfortable and interested in learning. I believe I transfer my passion for my subject to my students. I am able to draw on my extensive work and “real-world” experience, which students seem to appreciate. I have an informal manner, yet I expect much of my students. I expect them to do the work required and to have good attendance at the teaching sessions. I teach best through “hands-on” methods, allowing students to learn by doing.
I have worked most of my adult life in education or journalism, and I was able to combine my two passions as a journalism professor at the college level for several years.
