I obtained a bachelors degree in chemistry from Auburn University. When I was at Auburn University I took as many education courses as possible. The most helpful class allowed me to teach a middle school science class once a week. It was a great experience that gave me the opportunity to write lesson plans, set up for labs, and most of all gain teaching experience. I have helped many of my peers with their struggles in chemistry.
I love helping people and I love chemistry. I believe in using an inquiry based teaching method. What I like to do is show an example problem and have the student help me work it out by asking them questions related to the problem. Afterwords, I let them try to work a similar type problem. If they have problems then I let them explain to me where they are having trouble and we go from there.

I was barely 17 when I founded a one room school in the remote mountains of Hainan Island where I taught all subjects and all grades. Thus began my love of teaching. As the Cultural Revolution waned, I returned to the mainland and continued teaching while I finished high school on my own and earned a BS in teaching Chemistry. My career progressed through high school, community college until retirement teaching Organic Chemistry at the University of Guangzhou. In America I teach Mandarin language and Chinese culture to students from primary grades to soldiers. I am currently enrolled in a MEd in Mandarin Instruction tau ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from the Evergreen State College with a degree in mathematics. My other fields of study included chemistry, computer science, and physics. I have numerous hours of laboratory experience to support my in class and text book understanding of the materials covered. I've been a tutor at TESC for 3 years now working with students from all walks of life and working on any scientific material I've had any experience with.
I believe that whenever I'm working with a student they have the capacity to learn and internalize the material. I believe that the student can learn the material. My method of mathematical and scientific instruction is based off the Polya style of teaching where the instructor guides their students by questions and reviewing the known information. Thus the student's questions drive the student towards the answer desired. I find great personal reward ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I will be upfront, I was known as a firm, but fair, teacher. I see science as a field primarily learned through doing, and I enjoy performing science demonstrations with my students to help illustrate new concepts. At the same time, I expect students to attempt to solve problems on their own, as opposed to simply memorizing how I solve problems. While it is sometimes difficult at first, I find it gives them confidence to approach future concepts and ideas both in and out of the specific science course.
As a high school teacher, I facilitated the instruction of approximately 100 students in Chemistry in accordance with Massachusetts Learning Standards. Developed and implemented course curriculum for the Forensic Science course, including labs featuring gun shot residue testing, urinalysis, and DNA electrophoresis . Supervised the after-school chemistry tutoring program for all high ... read more

I have been professionally teaching for almost 30 years whether it be swimming to five year olds or flying to heads of aviation organizations. Few things give greater satisfaction than sharing what I have learned with others and watching them grow as they learn. A skilled, dedicated teacher, with a passion for the subject, can get anyone to learn, all the learner needs is a little desire. It is my job as a teacher/mentor to explore and grow that desire. I believe in a relaxed, but disciplined teaching environment of mutual respect between teacher and learner where both can learn from each other.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from the University of Washington last year with a BA in Journalism. I've also received an AA Degree from Highline Community College. Unlike many Journalism students, I have experience in arithmetic like algebra, pre-calculus and calculus. I've tutored students in math and writing, from first graders to college peers.
I am a very patient, hands-on style of tutor. I take the time and try to explain things to people who have a hard time understanding. I try to gage what the student is struggling with and also what they do understand, so I can quickly pinpoint their troubles and focus on the problem issue. Some kids need more explaining, others need a picture drawn out for them. I am good at finding what method people learn best with.
