A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with teenagers, young adults and older students returning to college. I work especially well with students who have a lack of confidence about their academic or intellectual abilities. May students have told me years after taking my courses that they would not have made it to graduation without my help. I also served as a drama director at one of my colleges and produced 4 highly successful full-length plays. Ten years after one of the productions the entire cast planned a surprise reunion for me at a local restaurant. I could ask for greater 'applause' for my teaching efforts.

I briefed visitors to NASA facilities. I worked briefly as a substitute teacher in California after passing the CBEST test. I have no formal training in teaching. My three children are all college graduates and good writers and well read. I taught them good reading and writing habits. The key to these skills is writing daily,reading daily, reciting aloud from texts by established authors, and being required regularly to summarize in clearly written English what one has read. Everyone can be taught to write simply and clearly.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored an adult non-native English speaker in English composition and other language arts related subject matter. I also tutored a third grade student in writing and he finished the Connecticut Mastery Test in writing with the highest possible score after my work with him. I am currently tutoring a non-native English speaking fifth grader in language arts.
I excel at developing a rapport with my students. They realize that I am the tutor/teacher but they also know they can talk to me and feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I find that appropriate types of praise seem to help a lot. I also exercise a great deal of patience and try to interject humor when appropriate.
