I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. If a student is failing to learn, it is less often the material itself and more often the way it is being presented. Finding a new way is something I have practiced in school and at BOCES, and is my greatest strength as a teacher. I have spent the last two years working with elementary age children with autism. I have also spent a couple months during the spring working with culturally diverse children, some with special needs, in an after school program in Sydney Australia. I have experience working 1:1 with children with autism in a self-contained classroom. I have be trained and have a great deal of experience with TCI .
