My teaching philosophy mirrors my learning philosophy. I believe in using a variety of methods and media to reach students on a level they can understand. Knowing that not all students learn in the same way necessitates an understanding of individual facilitation as well as group facilitation. I believe in creating an environment that creates curiosity and engagement that will result in long-term learning outcomes. Like Freire, I subscribe to the idea that one must know the word in order to know the world; and one must know the world in order to create meaningful change (Freire, 1970).

A Little Bit About Me...

I am firm, fair, and friendly. I adapt lessons to the student's learning style, bearing in mind what the student needs for success in the classroom. I make learning fun.
In 2000 I volunteered in the local high school's journalism class because of my passion for writing. The following year I was offered a position as yearbook adviser, and I further developed my skills with high school students. Since 2004 I have been a private tutor, teaching all elementary subjects as well as most middle school and high school curriculum. In 2005 I began teaching annual writing workshops at Simpson College for 6th - 12th grade students. In 2006 I attended substitute teacher training, and I began substitute teaching in 2009. I also had the privilege of instructing college students in a Volunteer Income Tax site this year.
