Summer Math Tutor

I have tutored on a college level up to Calculus II in my campus tutoring center. I have completed two National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates in math and biology. In addition, my minor is education and I have completed two courses, which require me to teach a math lesson to children in elementary school. I received great reviews from my teacher. In addition, to teach at an elementary school, I was required to have a background check, which I can give to you.

I spend much of time making the student understand that it is okay to feel behind in a subject and that the student should believe in himself. This belief is built on continued practice on fundamentals that I watch them go through but only ask questions when I see them going astray. Everyone needs to learn the material for his or herself. Growing up, I was always very gited academically. I never struggled with school, and learning was an easy pleasure. I graduated as valedictorian, and when I got to college I started tutoring to help others that had more difficulty in class. Math has always been my favorite subject to tutor because I am a problem-solver, by nature. Whenever one of my students has difficulty understanding a math problem, I take it from a different approach and once they understand the concept and that “light-bulb comes on,” I get over-whelmed with excitement….I’ve gotten through to them! Nevertheless, there are times when you think you have accomplished your goal and you later find out that the student did not retain the information previously learned. I found, through my experience, that this can be avoided by positive reinforcement. Some students do not retain information as well as others, so I love the use of math tricks in teaching the multiplication tables and acronyms, such as “PLEASE EXCUSE MY DEAR AUNT SALLY” to help students recall a process. I love helping people. I feel that a student can always teach a student better than a teacher. My experience as a teacher is rooted in family values. I was taught to believe that I could excel in what ever I put my mind too. After graduating from high school at the age of 16 and starting college as the youngest in my class, I quickly fell in love with chemistry. After, graduating with my BS, and latter my MS, I have worked between academia and industry for a number of years. This experience has allowed me to develop a hands on approach to teaching.
