From a love of nature, I pursued a career in the life sciences, majoring in Biology as an undergraduate and exploring the plant sciences in graduate school. An interest in the organization of chromosomes led to work with a small soil nematode. I studied gene expression, energy metabolism, and immune responses in a long-lived stage of this little worm. My teaching experience began with students at the secondary level. I believe teaching is best learned though practical examples (especially math). because I used to say the same thing that I'm sure that kids today are saying. When am i ever going to use this in my daily life? Its important to let them see the applications from knowing calculus based formulas to predict market declines (algorithms), to basic math in in inventory work, to understanding complex words and their proper sentence usage so they can understand what rudimentary or neophyte means in a job interview. Also, its important to inspire. most of the children/ teens in a tutoring course have been discouraged due to the fact that they are not picking up on a subject as quickly as their peers.
