I do better when the student has a desire to learn the material. I prefer to explain problems and then have the student do them, with me giving feedback and helping explain the problem as we go.

Confidence creates an interest in learning

I adapt to the students abilities and preferences. The main issue facing all students is building confidence. Confidence creates interest in learning.
Substitute Teaching from 03/15/2011 to present Chess Instructor from 12/17/2003 to 04/30/2004 Tutor for Western Michigan University 09/15/1997-04/30/2000. I have taught students ranging fro pre-school to 12th grade and also tutored at the unversity level. I feel most confident with students ranging from 3rd to 6th grade and at the college level or older. My main strengths are an ability to adapt to students with special needs and recognize that a lack of interest or focus is often the result of a lack of confidence. The best subjects for me are social studies, elementary math and writing for all ages. Both my degrees are in history with anthropology and geography being my minors in college. I have also taught chess on the eleme ... read more

I am firm believer that education is the key to success no matter what the person wants to do with their life. I try my best to make the learning experience fun and fruitful for students so that the material is easier to understand. All students have the ability to be great with the right amount of guidance which is where I come in. It is one thing for me to help a student understand the material at hand, but I also want to make a difference in their lives so that they get into the real world and succeed.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love people's capacity for learning. It gives me joy to know that I have helped another learn something new. I am patient, relaxed, and try to keep tutoring interesting for the recipient. It's important that the tutoree is engaged and enjoys grasping new lessons. I like to guide students into understanding the problem rather than just merely giving them the answer.
In 2006 I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Engineering Science. It gave me an understanding in a broad range of mathematical areas as well as areas of other sciences. During that time I worked with volunteer organizations like Salem Housing and Habitat for humanity for three years, which enabled me to mentor a variety of ages. In the last year I've worked with a homeschooling group on a project called, "Leaping Lizards."

I recently have spent the last six months in the Head Start Program as a center teacher. We prepare them for kindergarten. I have taught all grade levels. I currently have a BA with a concentration in K-8 education. Due to online classes, I have written hundreds of research and essay papers using APA style although I have helped my son use MLA which I can write in effectively.
Teaching mainly K-8 on a consistent schedule, I have learned that some students need one-on-one teaching. Being the third teacher in Head Start, I had time to work with individual students. All children were very well prepared for kindergarten. The older children, including High School and Middle School, I would walk around the room and aide them when they were confused. I also had them read the text orally taking turns and we would do the work sheet to prepare for quiz, test or new chapter. I am very pat ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have high expectations of students, but I adjust my "teaching style" to the student. For the struggling student, I usually begin at a level that they can easily perform. From that platform, we progress step-by-step until we find the area of difficulty and why it is there. When we master that, we move on. There are a variety of techniques to use, depending on the problem and the student, but the general expectation is that they can do it.
Although my degree is in music education, most of my teaching was done in Christian schools. I have taught math (through Algebra II), English, grammar, history, and science. I would be proficient in any math through Algebra I and any English, grammar or history through grades 12. I have taught grades 3-12.

I have recently graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint with a Bachelor of Science and teacher certification degree. I student taught during the fall '09 semester. Student teaching provided many opportunities to work on various teaching techniques. The student teaching semester consisted of; leading the class in discussion on a daily basis, creating worksheets, conducting lab experiments and other activities, grading homework and tests, and much more. Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I know that much of my success has been a result of learning from great dynamic teachers who really cared about me as a student and as a person. I believe that teaching is done best by adapting to the student, finding common ground, and then relating that connection to the topic in question. I would love to help your student find these connections and learn to be enjoy the process of education and achievement.
I have a BA in History from UM, which, of course, entailed not just learning and researching history, but also tremendous amounts of writing papers on a myriad of topics. I am currently a law student at Wayne State, and so am also well versed in legal and social issues, as well as, once again, lots of writing and grammar. I also have a background teaching and tutoring 100's of students how to prepare for the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT ... read more

I currently am working as a teacher for summer school. I enjoy walking in the school everyday and working with the students, helping them find academic success while having fun at the same time. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the right learning experiences. I love working with children one on one or in a group. I have found most children learn by hands on. I love to do experiments with students or fun games to make their learning a little easier. I am patient, easy going and energetic. I strive to make a difference in all of my students lives.
As an older recent graduate I have experienced how hard it can be to get a bachelor degree and raise a family at the same time. To be committed to both made me who I am today. I take great pride in the accomplishments I have succeeded in. I take just as much pride when tutoring children, their success ... read more

One of my essential beliefs is respecting the learner and their particular learning style. More About This Tutor...

I tutored with the Writing Fellows every Thursday at Schoolcraft College when I was working towards my Associate's in Liberal Arts. I helped students write and edit their papers. The primary focus was English but there were a few Social Studies/History students thrown in there. I graduated in April 2009 from Eastern Michigan University with my Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Media and Film with a Minor in Creative Writing.
I would usually look the paper over and point out problems with grammar and spelling and tell the student why they weren't working. I believe in the mantra "show, don't tell" when it comes to teaching. I'm pretty laid back and willing to work at whatever pace the student is comfortable with. I don't move on until I feel both of us are on the same page. I think the history of the English language has a lot of really interesting trivia.
