Motivated, patient, and experienced!

I have different styles for different students. Some prefer one-on-one and some prefer to learn in a group and participate. I graduated from Duke University in 2009 with a triple-major in Biomedical Engineering, Economics, and Mathematics. I have tutored in Economics and spent four years mentoring middle-schools students in Engineering as a Techtronics Fellow.
I have never been someone who "just gets it" when it comes to math or science, and so I understand more than many people who pursued degrees in these subjects just how puzzling they can be. Math seems like it is filled with "tricks" that seem impossible to know unless you were born with some innate gift. When I teach, I seek to show, step-by-step. how to think about a problem as more than a set of symbols on paper. The best word to describe my teaching is flexible. Students learn concepts in different ways. When each quarter begins and I hold my first discussion, I always start off saying that this time is the student's time. If my teaching style does not work with everyone let me know. If they want more example problems than lecture, I tell them to tell me to change it up. Also, if there is a hard concept to understand I try to explain it in multiple ways that get the same point across, in case someone does not understand it in one way, but may in another.
