My approach to teaching others is a holistic one. I believe each students learns at his or her own pace, based on individual interest levels. As the parent of Montessori students for many years, I believe each student must be motivated and given opportunities to develop his or her interests from direction provided by a mentor or instructor, then be given the freedom to advance the knowledge base. My teaching style is very interactive, as I believe that a student learns more quickly and retains more if he/she is actively involved. Therefore I work together with the student through the assigned task, giving independent study when needed. Some example tasks may include reading aloud together, reading silently followed by opportunity for comprehension through a question-answer session, and choices of writing tasks to reflect on reading. In the past I have used illustrations, acted out scenes from battles, utilized initialisms, and made up songs to help students learn concepts. The key to being a good teacher is being patient. I believe children learn best in a positive and stress-free environment. When a child does good on the work then I praise them and if they make a mistake then I explain to them the error in the homework.
