English Teacher/Tutor/TESOL

I believe education should be fun and that students learn better when they are in a relaxed environment. Humor, praise, patience, and encouragement are essential to good learning.

Presently, I teach Intensive English for International Students at the University of Northern Colorado, including grammar, reading, vocabulary, computer skills, writing, and speaking/listening classes.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching has always been my passion and I was excited to earn my bachelors degree in secondary education at the University of Northern Colorado in December of 1998. Teaching at Longmont High for three years allowed me to develop many teaching skills and gather a variety of experiences and ideas. After teaching social studies, I decided to try tutoring from home while learning to be a new mom. Our district cirriculum has provided many opportunities for me to tutor students in high school math (and other subjects) for five years. I enjoy getting to know each student personally and feel I am doing what I was always meant to do. The one on one time has been very beneficial for both myself and my students and I have gained a greater understaning of how students learn and find success.
The more time I spend with kids, the more I realize how many different ways they learn. Kids have taugh ... read more

I am a graduate of Law School, but my first love and continued passion is education. I have vast life experiences as well as experiences in education that were both diverse and enriching. My English background has provided me with a great content-area knowledge; while my law background has taught me an analytical side to reading and writing.
My love is working with kids. My true gift is working with kids who have otherwise had problems in an academic setting.

My teaching style is a mixture of many elements. The first thing I do is to make students enthusiastic about their studies. To give subtle motivation and build interest, I make the topic applicable to a person’s life. The next step is to work on confidence. You have to help students see that it is possible to overcome personal difficulties with specific subjects. To do this, I focus on each learner’s strengths and break topics down into manageable parts. I ask the questions that will direct each student to make connections on their own. As frustration is an inevitable part of learning for struggling students, I always remain flexible and ready to try a new tactic when necessary.
As a teacher’s assistant for photography in high school, I realized that I had a natural aptitude for teaching and breaking subjects down into manageable parts. In college, I was the person that othe ... read more

I teach with passion and enjoyment, which has always proved conducive to the learning process. I, myself, have always enjoyed being a student, and realized what qualities in teachers I found most effective. Patience, competency, articulation and good-natured humor go a very long way in education and I believe I possess those traits. I have worked with mainstream students, Special Education students, and Deaf students in a variety of educator roles from straight tutoring to camp counseling. Through these experiences, I have realized that a teacher must have flexibility and creativity in how they present information, as everyone has a different learning style. The responsibility lies with the educator to find that style and help the student reach his/her highest potential, and I feel confident in my ability to do so.
In all my endeavors I strive for variety. My collegiate caree ... read more

I strongly believe in learning by doing. I have never given a lecture or taught something 1on1 without providing practice problems or peppering students with questions. The hardest part about this is getting students to understand that it is okay to ask and answer questions. Most students I have encountered are used to simply looking at the teacher but never really interacting with them. If I ask a question and nobody gets it, I rephrase it, reteach the section that led up to the question and generally try to understand why the question is not being answered. Aside from some initial amount of memorization, students need to learn how to think through concepts and ideas, and the best way to do that, regardless of subject, is ask them things.
As a rising junior at Cornell University, I was asked to TA a Chemistry course for engineers. I accepted and entered into my first teaching posi ... read more

I taught middle school and high school Language and Literature for two years at a private school. During that time I also tutored in the subjects of history, math, and science. I am currently working on my Masters degree in Education and have had refresher courses in the areas of study outside of my initial degree. I love working with students and have taken courses specifically in test prep.
I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of th ... read more
