Hidden Talents Tutoring

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire with a degree in computer science, I started tutoring in the Academic Skills Center at UWEC and discovered this was a hidden talent. My instinctive use of the Socratic method earned praise from the director right away. While working at UWEC, I gained experience with a variety of learning and developmental disabilities, including Asperger's syndrome, visual impairment, brain damage, and dyscalculia. At the university, a technical college, and privately, I have tutored elementary through college students in math, chemistry, reading, grammar, computer science, computer literacy, and test preparation. A Little Bit About Me...

I'm in my senior year of High School, I have worked with my siblings on their school all of my life. I've helped my little brother who has ADHD with his homework, I've worked with him through book projects, spelling tests, history homework, pretty much anything and everything. I'm also very talented in the English area, writing and grammar specifically. Can write with both my right and my left hands, I work well with children no matter the age.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to learn, and when sharing that knowledge, my ultimate goal is to leave the student with a spark that will hopefully motivate them to pursue the subject above and beyond the lesson. Motivation, learning style, and goal structure are components I consider when setting up a lesson. As a computer programmer, I tend to be task oriented. I like to break a project into smaller chunks with clear boundaries. I believe that having the student participate in defining these goals helps them focus, keeps them from getting overwhelmed, and gives them a way to measure their own success. In addition, the teacher needs to ensure the student is motivated to learn by providing materials and methods that are of interest to the student, and match his/her learning style.

My teaching method is to use the principle approach. Each academic subject has foundational principles that make up that subject’s core. To master a subject, a student must understand these principles and then see them expand as the student progresses through a subject. I believe students can be taught problem-solving skills, organizational skills and character-building principles through every subject. I am a very adaptable teacher--I can easily pick up on a student's needs and abilities, and work to their strengths in that way. I enjoy not only helping them learn, but also their backstory and considering how it affects their learning style. During my undergrad studies at UWRF, I was sponsored to become a tutor in the Writing Center on campus. There was a prerequisite practicum, but it was very hands-on learning. I worked with students from a variety of backgrounds (ESL, freshman comp, MS candidates, etc). At Metro State I participated in a semester program teaching English in Puerto Rico, for which I received the ESL certification. I also TA'd for Writing and Designing for the Web.
