I am a certified Social Studies teacher in Pennsylvania working on completing my Master's in the Art of Education. I have 26 hours completed for Master and only need 6 more credits for completion. I have been student teaching, tutoring and observing over the passed to years. I have worked with students from Pre-K to collegiate level. I believe effective learning can occur in a 1-on-1 tutoring situation when the tutor and the student can communicate well. Tone, mood, and setting all come into play. A tutor who is relaxed, cheerful, encouraging, and resolutely intelligent is more likely to be approachable and someone the student will collaborate with successfully. I believe in active listening and working together to establish a method of studying.
I took high school and college seriously. After college I worked for several years before attending law school. After law school I decided to combine my legal experience with hands-on medical skills, and I enrolled in a Registered Nurse program at SUNY Delhi, which I will complete next May. Although I have no formal teaching experience, I do have been developing my teaching style for many years while I worked with the developmentally disabled. I learned to identify a teachable moment, which is a time at which the student would be most receptive to learning. Being a tutor for grades 6-8 was different because they had the basics. They needed to be informed and focused. I have always wanted students to really know the material being covered. This has meant keeping their interest through jovial yet concentrated lesson planning.
