One year after graduating from Westminster High School, I began substitute teaching for Carroll County in many different subjects. Through these opportunities I became aware of The Arc of Carroll County, where I decided to apply for a full-time job as an instructional assistant, where I have spent the last five years working with the developmentally disabled population. Shortly after starting at the Arc, I decided to return to school to further my education. I began this process at Carroll Community College, from where I graduated in 2007. I am currently working towards my Masters Degree in School Counseling and work as an intern at McCaskey High School. In addition to counseling I am interested in tutoring students, as I believe with a solid education anything is possible. I have worked at Huntington Learning Center in the past and enjoyed the tutoring experience. There is no better feeling then helping a student reach his/her potential.
Since I have the opportunity to work one-on-one with students on a daily basis I try to tailor my teaching style to each student. When students are more visual I try to use photos or stories to explain concepts. However, when students learn better by reading I allow them to do so, and discuss the reading after they have had time to absorb the information. I feel like I have to adjust to each student's individual learning style when trying to teach.
