Energetic, passionate tutor ready to teach spanish to anyone

How I teach depend on what the student needs most; I would never coerce anyone into a predefined tutoring rubric, as that may harm their ability to learn.
In high school I excelled in spanish to such an extent that I placed out of most of the university spanish classes. Thus, while I have moved on to learning arabic my spanish skills are honed to the extent that I plan to graduate with a spanish major (in addition to my anthropology major) by the time I finish my undergraduate work at Northwestern.

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught Spanish for a year at PSU and have also taught for a year at UNH. In addition to my experience in higher education I also taught a semester of Spanish at Plymouth Elementary and have tutored extensively for elementary and high school students. In addition to my professional experience I have also spent extensive time abroad, as a student and a volunteer. I spent a semester in Spain as an undergrad in the spring of ‘05 and participated in four consecutive summer service trips to Nicaragua between ‘04-‘07, serving as the delegation advisor in ‘07. I also participated in a volunteer trip to the D. R. in the spring of ‘09, and in the summer of ‘09 I worked as a counselor for a service based program for American youth in Peru.

My teaching style is as varied as the students I have taught. I feel it is important to relate to the student in order to help them learn best. When there are different learning styles, I do my best to use a variety of teaching techniques in order to cater to the need of the student. I feel that follow up is important, as well as repetition and hands-on practice. I am not a lecturer. I find my best students learn one on one or in a small group where they can be comfortable and ask questions. With children, I have a similar approach as learning, for a child, can be very intimidating, and they have already had enough trouble in school, so patience and kindness is a best practice.

I believe that everyone can learn a second language, but it takes a lot of practice and dedication. I used to teach the martial arts when I was in high school and have adapted many of the tools I acquired there into my academic theories of teaching, such as; a high degree of patience, the "praise-correct-praise" method, and to lead by example. Everyone learns in a different way; having said that, I believe it is essential to keep your teaching methods well-varied. Repetition can lead to boredom and a lack of interest. It is important when working with students to not only work out of school workbooks, but to also practice on conversational abilities through listening to songs and verbal exercises.

I am very comfortable working with students of all ages. I am extremely patient and easy-going with a good sense of humor. I believe in enabling students to become proficient life-long learners. I try to encourage my students to look beyond the textbook in order to achieve greater enrichment in their lives. Learning should not stop at the school doors. In order to be successful in life, students need to learn how to find and utilize resources to help them grow and mature intellectually throughout their lives. It is my ultimate goal to enable students to think critically and become successful life-long learners.
Over the past several years I have helped students achieve their potential in a wide variety of educational settings. I have taught several different subjects including social studies, math, reading, and French to students ranging from kindergarten to seniors in high school. ... read more

The temptation as instructor is to simply restructure the way in which a student learns in order to fit your view, and those I have helped encourage such behavior. Guidance, suggestions, and allusions as to how a student can improve and understand is a better alternative. Simply doing the work for the student has little value in regards to education. A fine balance must be struck between open ended comments of little use and high jacking creativity through re-working large portions of work. My policy is to make the student aware of their shortcomings, explain my reasoning, and use enigmatic reserve in telling them how to correct errors. Unless the mistake is simple, I hold back on literally telling them what to do. .
As an undergraduate, my focus for studies in English were both Critical Literary Analysis and Creative Writing. Analytical writing was stressed heavily, giving me ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Working with children has always been my passion. I feel as though it is important to engage all different types of learners and to make them feel as if the classroom is a place where everyone is safe and included. I have worked extensively in the past with children that have Autism. I believe that all children, despite any disability, are capable of being successful students as long as they are given the right tools and the support that is necessary.
Coming from a family of teachers, the importance of education has always been stressed to me. The emphasis was placed not only on succeeding academically, but also to gain a true understanding of the subject matter. I also hold a Bachelors of Science in Family Studies with a concentration on early childhood education and graduate ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with two bachelor's degrees. One degree is in Spanish and I consider myself completely fluent, especially having spent a semester in Costa Rica. During this time I volunteered at a school teaching students ages 5 through 18 English at different levels. My other degree is in Social Thought and Political Economy which required a lot of writing, generally 15 to 25 page papers per class. It is a major dedicated to social change and I learned subjects in all areas including History, Current Affairs, Politics and Political Science.
I have been a gymnastics instructor for about eight years which has helped in shaping my teaching style. I love to push children in a supportive manner so that they can believe in themselves and truly get the most of their education. I would define my teaching style as hands on. If I can find a real life example of the material at hand, I will use it. I love to work on whiteboards/ chalkboards with students. This way they are out of their seat and showing me what they know. I am very willing to bend to any style of learning. Playing games, creating flashcards, repetitive drilling of information. Some students also learn better when they have oral stimulation such as chewing or sucking on candy. As long as the students learn the information and can remember it, then I am happy and confident.
This past September I became a tutor in the Special Needs Department at Masconomet Regional Junior High School. I chose this department and school because I was once a student in the program.
