I believe the best way for students to learn is by doing and discovering the material hands on as oppose to being lectured to. I like to instruct demonstrate the learning material to my students intially, but after that i prefer to have my students try the material themselves so they can see and understand what aspects of the material they dont understand. That helps me pinpoint what i need to focus on as far as helping them with a particular area of miscomprehension. I strongly believe in learning by doing instead of learning by seeing. For the subjects I tutor, my style is 'pushing a pencil'. Only a genius can handle these subjects without doing problems. Everyone else, if they want to learn the subject must do problems. Usually the problems worked are the ones with answers in the back of the book. I'm careful not to do problems that are assigned as homework. Besides, I have all my books at home, and I know students will not have the same problems assigned as the ones I choose to do out of my 20 year old books.

With this in mind, my teaching style usually walks a student through a concept thoroughly, utilizing problems to guide understanding. I find it beneficial to first gain an perceptive of where the student is at, walk them through the concept, and discuss problems step-by-step until a solution is reached.
