A Little Bit About Me...

By sparking curiosity, asking questions, allowing time to think and investigate for answers, and pointing out clues that will hopefully lead the students to discovering answers, I hope to mentor my students like a creative safari tour guide. The desire to learn and think critically must be instilled in all learning environments. These things are imperative because they are skills needed for life. I want to be a life-long learner; and I want my students to be as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer to let my tutoring sessions to be student led. What that means is that rather than treating the sessions like a teacher-student interaction, I let the student take responsibility for the work they want to improve. I have found that students who take control of their own education as opposed to being told to do so perform much better.

More About This Tutor...

My main experience lies in working with elementary aged children in literacy and religious education programs. However, I received a bachelors degree in political science from DePauw University and a law degree (with honors) from the University of Nebraska, so I have a great deal of educational experience to draw from in teaching students as a tutor. In addition to my educational experience, I also have “real world” business experience and excellent research and writing skills through working as an attorney, all of which I will also draw from while tutoring.
I enjoy working with students of all ages. I strive to encourage students to develop a love for learning and the ability to learn independently. Each person has a different learning style so I like to allow students to take an active role in designing the method in which they will best learn the material. The best activities ... read more

For the past seven years I have been tutoring all levels of English and ESL both privately and at Fullerton College in California, where I received my CRLA Master Tutor certification and compiled an extensive workbook explaining concepts of English grammar. During my time as a tutor, I have learned to adapt to different learning styles, and have worked with students of all levels including those with disabilities. My background in American Studies has been a valuable asset to my tutoring because the discipline requires rigorous research and analysis. In addition to sharp critical thinking skills, I possess a firm grasp of grammar and mechanics as well as conceptual and organizational tactics, which are the foundation of good composition.

A Little Bit About Me...

Before my selection in the Fulbright Program to come to teach Arabic here at UNL, I was teaching French and English for high school students until I got my Bachelor's degree in 2008. With the Fulbright program, I went through various workshops on teaching skills. I learned crucial teaching techniques that have been impacting my career as well as my students'. I am currently a Teaching Assistant at UNL working at the Department of Classics & Religious Studies and pursuing my Masters' Degree at the History department.
I still recall the early days when I was wrestling with foreign languages. Our French teacher had a positive impact on my teaching skills in that each time she made me feel that I need to put myself in the student's place to get the message across. Trying to come up with different examples to convey the same message. Most importantly, learning a foreign language needs p ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I try to employ "active learning" with call and response lecturing. I also encourage students to identify how they learn, by noting their own strengths such as linear or circular thinking. I also help them identify how they learn the best and encourage research, research, research as well as using games and multiple approaches to difficult concepts. I've been a college adviser and lecturer for the since August of 2003, so I'm patient, caring, concerned, but able to impart discipline and organization skills. I hold students to high expectations, but I coach them into understanding how to recognize their strengths and weaknesses. I care about them, and they respond.
I am an old school educator; my students learn the whys behind the hows. I absolutely love knowledge and plan to continue my education for as long as I can. I am currently working on a PhD in Fiction Writing at UNL, but I ... read more

I am confident that my college education at the University of Nebraska, interpersonal skills, direct work experience and passion for education and further learning make me a great candidate for this exciting opportunity. During those five years I tutored English to a wide range of multi-national students, helping them on a wide range of areas from grammar to rhetorical writing. I was a spokesman and representative for the Student Athlete Committee and engaged in numerous school visits helping children learn the fundamentals of English writing and successful presentation.
