I have taught and tutored at all levels ranging from Elementary through College in both "Mainstream" and "Special Education" environments. In addition, I have a great deal of experience teaching and tutoring ESL and Law Students at the college and post-graduate levels. In conjunction with the instructional piece, I have designed, authored and implemented curricula in all of the above areas.

Blueberry House; Preparing Today for a Successful Tomorrow

I have taught for 30 years. Five years ago I began tutoring when my daughter was diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder. I feel like I can do more as a tutor than a classroom teacher. My heart lies with these kids and I want to do everything I can to help make them a success. I create an individual course of study for each child based on their learning style. I help kids understand their homework and teach them how to study so they get more out of the time they are spending in their school work. I teach reading comprehension and fluency. My students typically see a two to three year jump in grade level after just a few hours of tutoring. I tutor children with ADD, dyslexia, sensory disorders, dysgrahia, autism, aspergers, and other learning disabilities. If you want only the best than call Blueberry House. Let's start working together to reach your goals of success!

My teaching style is fun: relaxed and engaging for my students and for me too. I am serious about giving my clients the best and richest learning situation as possible. I use a modality designed just for that student and perhaps not offered at school. Since I am in a one on one setting I can ideally focus on just that one student's personal needs. I communicate clearly with all stake holders to ensure I am meeting the learner's needs and expectations. I know some of our relationships will be short term to get past an academic challenge and others may be longer to meet your needs. Whatever the length or circumstances I want it to be the best, positively memorable and educationally worthwhile experience for my student.
Throughout my successful career as a teacher and school counselor, I've instructed every level from kindergarten to college level. Likewise I've had the privilege of ... read more

My most significant experience is as an LSAT tutor, where I am proud to boast dozens of successful students over the last two years. I can provide excellent references upon request.
In your initial consultation (a free 30 minutes with your first session!) we will review your personal situation and goals, assess your strengths and weaknesses, and develop a study and tutoring plan that meets your needs, within your budget. We see education as a meeting of minds, where every participant is on the same level. While a tutor may well have more knowledge of a subject than the student, learning is a communicative and collaborative process; the transmission of ideas can only happen when we acknowledge we each have something to learn from one another. Part of what makes Logic Studies so successful and distinctive is that we refuse to fall into the prescribed teacher-student dynamic. Never condescending and demonstrating mutual respect, the tutors at Logic Studies treat their students as peers, or coequals .

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a BA from Willamette University with a major in history and minors in math and Spanish. I then attended Willamette's MAT program where I earned a Masters in Education with endorsements to teach middle and high school mathematics, social studies and ESOL. I have taught at Woodburn High School for 6 years now in the mathematics department. I have taught a range of mathematical levels: from pre-algebra through Advanced Placement Statistics. Throughout college and my teaching career I have tutored a variety of students between the ages of 5 to adult in subjects such as reading, writing, math, study skills, and SAT preparation.
Helping students be successful is the most important aspect of teaching, in my opinion. Each student is unique in his or her learning style. A teacher's job is to find the way in which a student learns best and to encourage them to think o ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Education has been a major focus of my life since I was in middle school and decided I wanted to be a teacher. In middle school and high school I worked one-on-one tutoring peers and younger children in all subjects. Throughout college I tutored in an after-school program and worked in an elementary school as an instructional assistant. After graduating I have substituted in K-12 public and private schools in Alaska and in Arizona. I have also taught English in Mexico and in China. I recently finished a 4th grade long-term substitute position in the Alhambra School District.
I strongly believe that children are our most precious asset and our hope for the future. I am passionate about helping children learn and grow through education and extracurricular activities. I love teaching children and helping them to first realize their abilities and then to reach their potential. M ... read more

Most of my experience has been with adults as learners--coaching, supervising, teaching groups of staff and colleagues in the mental health field, and now--teaching CPA candidates on what they need to pass the CPA exams. Prior to my work as a CPA and as a manager of human services programs, I was a clinician, working with children and adolescents and their families. I am not sure I have one teaching style. Over the years, I have learned that people learn differently and that the instructor/coach needs to first understand the learner's learning style before trying to teach. I love to see people grow and, personally, I love learning. My people skills and my enjoyment of learning are probably my greatest gifts as a teacher.
I have extensive experience as a provider and manager of human services in the field of mental health, and am recognized for my contributions to the fiel ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching comes as natural to me as parenting, the key is to set high but achievable goals, as well as firm expectations and boundaries. I have been regarded as a favorite teacher these past three years, and many former students come to visit me on their own time every week. I am patient, easy going, and considerate, but I do expect a level of rigor and effort that pushes my students to do their best. I come from the "Balanced Literacy" school of thought, and have used this practice to foster the growth of all of my students, regardless of their ability level. In addition, I am a pioneer in the use of the "Four Square Writing Method" as an organizational model for the writing process. It has been quite a hit with my students, as well as my colleagues. In these past five years, I have made a difference in the lives of hundreds of students. I can't wait to hit a thousand, ten thousand, and ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently relocated to Portland from the New York City / New Jersey area after working in the e-marketing department at Carnegie Hall. I've studied piano throughout my life, starting at age 7, and graduated Westminster Choir College in Princeton NJ with a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2005. While at Westminster, much of the curriculum I studied was focused on music education and piano pedagogy. I have experience teaching private piano lessons to all ages (as young as 5 and as old as 70), teaching music in elementary school classes, and tutoring other college students. In addition, I have been working for the past several years in the technology / IT field and have a lot of experience with all aspects of technology.
My entire life has been surrounded by both music and technology and I'm looking to share that with my students. In terms of musical instruction, though the particular cu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching students of all levels is a passion of mine. From my many years of experience around children, I have found that I do not have just one teaching style. Each child is unique and therefore the approach I take with each child is unique. I have had the greatest success in trying different learning methods to tailor each educational program to meet the unique needs of each individual child. My educational background and prior tutoring history have taught me to analyze not only how the child can process the information itself, but to look at the environment and social factors that can affect learning and academic performance. By using this holistic approach, I have found that I have been able to effectively and positively affect each child I have worked with.
In order to put myself through my college education, I worked nearly full time as a tutor throughout the duration of my c ... read more

Teachings students one-on-one is the love of my life. I see progress in this format that is outstanding. Students can make several levels of progress in a short period of time. Providing a positive, constructive and enthusiastic environment is foundational to the success of the student. The teacher also must show by their actions that they are very interested in the success of the student. With positive interventions, there will be a positive difference in the life of the tutored child.
The biggest motivation of my teaching career is to hold a high standard of expectation. I have a MA in Special Education, and a BA in Business Administration. I am adding to my teaching certificate an additional endorsement in middle level and high school math. I have home schooled all four of my children. Two of my children have BA degrees and another is currently in college. I teach an afterschool ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My background includes an undergraduate degree in History and International Studies as well as a Master's degree in Education. With this background, I have taught US History, World History, and Government on all levels from college prep to AP. In addition, I have been involved in an after school program for low achievers designed to improve classroom performance and prevent dropouts. My experience teaching AP World History has given me a strong background in teaching and developing verbal and written skills.
Teaching strategies which have worked for me in the classroom include cooperative learning groups that encourage social interaction, as well as, jigsaw groups. The use of PowerPoint presentations to illustrate the material utilizes a technology component which I find useful. Strategies for special needs students would include making sure to see if they are a visual, auditory, ... read more

My undergraduate experience has given me both breadth and depth in academic subjects. The curriculum I've studied at St. John's includes 4 years of language (2 Ancient Greek, 2 French); 3 years of laboratory science (physics, chemistry, biology, electricity & magnetism, etc.); 4 years of mathematics (including geometry, algebra, and calculus); and well as 4 years of "The Great Books of Western Civilization" tutorial wherein I have studied philosophy, literature, theology, political theory, and economics. I feel very comfortable in a tutoring position in most academic subjects spanning from K-college.
I am most familiar with conversation, as a means of relating information and testing understanding. I think that a through understanding in any subject comes about when a student can recognize the important concepts, and how they relate to each other, and speak those concepts in words ... read more
