I am firm but like to use students life experiences and hobbies to teach them subjects. Younger students I like to teach through play due to the fact that I am a firm believer that children learn through play.
I have been studying education since my high school graduation in hopes of one day being the choir director at my high school.At the moment I am a student at UTEP studying bilingual elementary education and plan to receive a masters in music education after receiving my bachelors degree. Student centered and humanistic, I seek to find the student's ways of knowing and help them to build from their own starting point. I heavily endorse active reading and listening and value discussion and project-based learning. My ultimate goal is to help students to realize that they are often capable of much more than they give themselves credit.

Poetry is one of my top subjects!

I have a lot of experience tutoring elementary children, ages 6-11. I have a bit of experience teaching middle schoolers and high schoolers, though not as much as elementary. I am currently an Education major with a minor in history. I am also considering a degree in music and English. Generally I tutor in reading and writing. A Little Bit About Me...

After receiving my BS I taught high school English for nine years in Vermont and Massachusetts. I earned my MED in 1985 and served as an administrator at both the high school and elementary school levels. I've taught emotionally disturbed children and middle school ESL students in Santa Fe. Most recently I have been tutoring elementary students in language arts and math. For the past five years I've also tutored language arts and math to 1st grade through middle school students after school.
My teaching style is to make learning fun. I like to bring materials to the lesson that match a student's interest and still build necessary skills. My middle school students became experts at poetry and grammar with daily competitions. Practice is imperative to learning, is my theory, and the key to the success I've had with students.

A Little Bit About Me...

Each child is different. On a one on one setting, it would be advantageous to allow the student some freedom so that their learning style leads to maximum learning. My goal is to teach the student to love self-learning so that the student appreciates learning without a tutor or teacher present. All children can learn in an environment conducive to learning given the tools needed to cope with whatever stress may be interfering with their education process. I strive to connect with the student so that the student knows I am willing to impart a love of learning to them, not just give them a bunch of facts.
