I always start with the basics. We start with mastering what you already know, then we move on to more complex skills.
I graduated High School in 2011. During my junior year of High School I started home schooling so I could take college classes. I took three classes at Skyline College, all of which were completed with a B or better by the time I was a senior in High School. For math, I would explain the mechanics and techniques of how to get the answer. I want to make sure the student understands fully so I would also be asking the student questions just to ensure he or she knows the material well. For English, I would focus on practicing and discussion. Since it is a langauge, I focus more on practicality. I would also talk to the student and discuss whatever he is having trouble with so that I can give him or her tips to improve.
I have usually insisted in helping people who have struggled in English and Math. I would do my best to explain the material until the student would have a solid understanding of the material.
