I have been tutoring almost all of my life, beginning in 5th grade when I tutored a special needs student in spelling. In junior high school, I began regularly tutoring mathematics to other students and have continued doing so to this day. While in college, I was employed as a tutor for my college as well as several community high schools. As a tutor in college, I worked with a student who was blind and 95% deaf to teach her algebra 1 and 2. She successfully completed both subjects with an A! I truly believe in learning by doing. Being shown the answer never helps anyone. You must go through the process of doing to be confident in your abilities. I try to make the student feel as comfortable as possible with making mistakes. That's the whole point of studying, to improve. This requires a lot of patience and understanding of how the student views the assignment. The most important skill I can teach someone is how. I believe in not only helping students to understand the material but instilling in them a joy of learning. I want students to understand how to get to the answers, why the answers are correct and how to do it themselves. This skill boosts self esteem and confidence. I also believe that it is very important to teach study skills and techniques that can be applied to master any subject or exam. Sometimes students get overwhelmed, but one of the most important things a student can learn is how to plan ahead and use their time efficiently. I graduated from high school with honors from a school that never pushed the effectiveness of attending college to students. I maintained my focus and attended Virginia State University in the fall of 2006. My mother was my inspiration, so much that I ventured towards science as my field of study.
