My teaching style is centered around working with an individual wherever they happen to be at. In college, I assisted other students in Drury's writing lab. And, as an editor and journalist, I have extensive skills in dealing with helping reporters to communicate clearly and succinctly.
I graduated magna cum laude from Drury University, a private liberal arts college, in 1987, with a major in fine arts (photography and graphic design emphasis) and minor in communications (four years experience on the college newspaper). I also have 21 years of experience as an editor at weekly and daily newspapers in Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Working primarily at smaller newspapers, I have an extremely varied background of experiences - from writing "hard" news and features to on-the-job training for new reporters just out of college or new to the profession.

I have a vety high IQ, but am also very accessible.

I engage the student with questions and illustrations. I am big on gentle correction and encouragement. I know the difference between Latinized English and real English, and I share this with my students. I know grammar is something one can't prescribe, just describe.
I have tutored off and on since high school, and have been a substitute teacher for all grades for the last six years. I excel at spelling and grammar, and had a classical education in literature, Latin and Greek. Because of this classical education, I have been able to teach in-depth,and to share the etymology of many English words with students and teachers alike. 1) Give the person you are turtoring an opportunity to tell you where they are having a problem. 2) While working through problems monitor the person you are tutoring to see if there are other problems. 3) Suggest changes. People learn at different levels, and what works for one does not always work for another; therefore,finding the way for each individual student is the key. I have also found that most people learn a task by 'hands on' learning, not listening to how it should be done.
