While in college, I have worked with numerous tutoring programs both paid and volunteering. I worked for two years as a tutor mentor for the Upward Bound Program, where I managed a group of 12 college students that tutored and mentored 75 low-income and first generation students in grades 9-12. Also while in college, I have have had the opportunity to work closely with numerous Metro Public Schools around the Nashville area. Currently I am working with the Martha O'Bryan Center at a Reading Achievement Program Tutor.
I believe that each child has its own learning style, therefore as a tutor you must be able to adapt quickly to the specific needs to every child. I think that the most important thing in tutoring is gaining the attention and confidence that you know what you are doing and talking about. I also live by the belief that repetition is the father of learning.

In my experience the fundamental reason people need tutoring boils down to a failure to truly understand the concept of the debit and credit. I always begin by reviewing these concepts and ensuring that the student/intern fully understands the logic behind the debit and credit. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that successful tutoring begins with establishing a relationship with the tutee. Once I have an idea of his/her personality and learning style, I adjust my tutoring methods to fit the needs of that particular tutee. So for example, if a student is an auditory learner I try to involve more tutoring processes in which he/she listens in order to learn the information. However, generally speaking there are two heuristic practices that I like to follow. The first is to talk as a little as possible in order to allow the tutee to guide the flow of the session. I control the session by asking pointed questions that ease him/her in the appropriate direction. Secondly, I have the tutees teach me the information they are attempting to learn.
