A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated in December 2013 with a Bachelor's of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. My specializations are in elementary education (prek-6th grade) and all-level special education. I worked in Hale Center ISD for the after school enrichment program at Akin Elementary from August 2012 until the program ended in June 2013. I completed one rotation of student teaching in special education at Hillcrest Elementary and one rotation of student teaching in a 3rd grade classroom at Thunderbird Elementary. I have been teaching special education at Highlands Elementary since January 2014.
Through my teaching style I emphasize hands-on learning by using manipulatives. I also use modeling and repetition. I am a student of history and believe that knowledge acquisition comes from interest and enthusiasm on the part of the learner. This interest comes from having an instructor who them selves is a learner. A partnership in the tasks being presented usually results in the student wanting to understand the information and making connections. To promote critical thinking I present the material in a global manner, allowing the learner to relate the information/skill to the real-world.
Creative, innovative, and interesting lessons are my forte. I am experienced in providing a constructivist-based approach to knowledge acquisition. Hands-on lesson promote student involvement and increase the development of student responsibility towards their education. Since moving to Houston in 1999, I have accrued teaching experience in the following venues: Adminsitration, helping students with time management skills and homework. Taught my own children phonics, constructed science fair experiments and writing assignments. Tutor: Tutored a child with learning disabilities in Social Science, Language Arts, Spelling and History.
My teaching style is thus: First engage the student about what subject he likes, engage in small talk and then tutor the assignments. ALways praise the student and point his or her strong abilities and plus tell the student they can do this assignment. First I let the student try the assignment and then I will jump in and help.
