My style is dependent on the student. While the end result is having a student understand the material, the way of achieving this varies with each person. Some students require a lot of hand holding while some require a more hands off approach. To achieve understanding I will cater to the students needs.
I have tutored high school students who are college bound during my undergraduate years at William Paterson University of New Jersey. I also tutored my fellow undergraduates. I then pursued a doctorate and was active in many peer study groups where were tutored each other in neuroscience and organic chemistry. I have a love for science which shows through my enthusiasm in imparting scientific knowledge to others.

My comments on tutoring Life Science : I hold a Ph.D in a Life Science discipline.

I believe that stimulating conversation and allowing people to arrive at answers on their own and through experience is the best way to form lasting connections.
I took a variety of Biology classes and Labs at WPI mostly focused on Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics. I recently finished my PH.D. where I studied control of viral gene expression. This work encompassed a variety of biological disciplines including virology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and molecular genetics, all of which I am quite experienced in. I also have experience teaching in a seminar format as well as in small groups. As a senior graduate student I was responsible for leading discussions prior to invited speaker seminars.

Become a star, through dedication and desire to succeed!!

I have taught in both suburban schools at the high school level and urban schools at the elementary/middle school level. While teaching I previously have tutored students. My main experience teaching has been various science courses but I have also taught math and reading. I began my education thinking I would be an elementary school teacher but then discovered my love of science so I took additional classes while completing my Master's so I could be certified to teach science. When I began teaching I realized many special education students were not receiving the appropriate accommodations to ensure their success so I decided to specialize in Special Education as I pursue my PhD so I can offer the best education to my students and help them become successful and feel confident with their new skills.
I love interacting with my students and finding out what drives them and what ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I'm a SCSU graduate with a GPA of 3.6. I recently went back to college to pursue a career in Anesthesia. I have a Bachelor Degree in Biology, an Associates Degree in Chemistry. Experience as a 7th and 8th Grades Science Teacher and also as a Tutor. The children needed serious help! - the Magnet School they attended told their parents they would have to work really hard in order to continue attending the school. After a couple of months under my tutoring and motivating skills they became #1 in their classrooms! I have a great gift of not only teaching a specific subject but also developing in the student a desire to succeed! My early recollection as a teacher is as a fifteen-year-old teaching ESL classes to adults.
I'm a very motivated person with a great sense of humor! I have attended seminars and read many books about motivation, people skills and children learning/developmen ... read more

I am of the opinion that children should be given clues and lead on to discover answers to questions. In some areas I like them to memorize certain facts which will help them solve problems better. A combination of memorizing and deriving from basic known concepts will help a child solve any problem without having to sweat over it.

I have cultivated strong writing and analytical skills in my college career at UConn. I took a variety of classes that requried me to articulate myself through research papers, poems, lab reports, and speeches. While at UConn I volunteered with a local congregation helping non English speaking individuals learn how to speak conversational English.
I think that relating a particular subject to a student is the best way to spark their interest and draw them in as learners. Often students do not learn the significance of what they are learning therefore they disconnect themselves from the material. I want to help students care about their education and teach them that any subject can be your best subject when you give it your all.

The best teacher helps guide a student through the process hands-on and finds the way to make it clear to that person on their level through gentle discovery and practice.

After finishing my masters degree at Sacred Heart in Elementary Education, I accepted a position as a special ed aide for a boy in the third grade with severe learning disabilities. The following school year I was teaching second grade in the Bridgeport Public Schools. I then spent three years teaching sixth, seventh, and eighth grade at an interdistrict magnet school in Bridgeport. At the middle school level, I taught primarily Language Arts and Math. However, I was also responsible for teaching some science and social studies. I enjoy working with students from the elementary to middle school level, and helping them to be successful, enthusiastic learners.

Having raised 3 children with different learning styles, I feel I can help students in many different ways. Whether they learn through sight or more adapt to tactile learning, I have several years exposure in all areas. The use of different math manipulatives is essential in the learning process. Once you know how a child learns, anything is possible. Patience and understanding are 2 qualities that I have acquired working with students and raising my children.

As a graduate of Yale University, I recognize the value of education for the generation of young people who will soon run our country. For the past year, I have tutored students in a wide variety of subject areas: English, History, Geometry, Biology, Spanish, French, and SAT prep. I work well one-on-one with students of all ages and ability levels.
I believe that all students learn in their own way and that a teacher must get to know his or her students in order to evaluate their strengths and specific needs. It is important to give students guidance, but also to teach them to work independently to boost their self-confidence. I constantly seek feedback from my students and their parents to find the best way to help them succeed.

The most important characteristic in helping a child learn is to not only demonstrate a profound knowledge of material, but channel one's charisma into helping motivate the learner. Making it interesting, teaching in several different planes, and understanding how the student learns, are several core components of my teaching strategies. Also nearly unlimited patience should be stressed. I am a firm believer in Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory and that presentation of material suited to the strengths of the learner will succeed.
As a graduate of an intense Honors Program with proficiency in multiple subjects, I have lent a helping hand towards other students as well as those who are younger than myself.
