Professor of English: to Broaden your Mind and Skills

I have taught at both the middle and high school level in the subject of English. Within that broad subject I have taught World Literature, British Literature, Creative Writing, Rhetoric, Composition and more. I am currently a Professor at San Jacinto College where I teach collegiate level Composition.
I have a hands-on approach to teaching. It is my desire to facilitate a student's own ability to self-teach, to solve and understand new problems as they occur. This type of teaching will not only improve whatever English and reading skills needing improvement, but will also translate into all other aspects of their education and life.

Let me Guide Your Child

I prefer that the student understands the purpose behind learning. In order to achieve my goal, I spend quality time in talking and developing an effective communication platform. I avoid doing rote learning. Therefore I make the worksheets and lesson plan as application based as I can. Some techniques and strategies are also employed on occasions.
Having taught for more than five years as a certified teacher, I feel that I have what it takes to be an educator. Understanding the psyche of the student is of prime significance to me, which helps me in directing the teaching strategies and techniques. In order to let the student realize the significance of learning, I try to design a curriculum that is application based.

I have a background in Psychology, so I am extremely intuitive with what a person needs regarding their learning style. I am able to adapt my teaching style to their needs. Patience is something that I have learned over the years, so I am able to work well with those who just need a little extra attention. One of my greatest talents is being able to put myself in another's shoes, and therefore understand why it is something is not clicking. This way I can develop their skills through their best way of communicating.
I began tutoring people when I was in the eigth grade. I decided I wanted to help out at the school across the street from my middle school in Colorado. I enrolled in a class that allowed us to go and assist the teachers and help the students. I fell in love with kids then for sure. I already knew I liked them because I started babysitting when I was 11 and couldn't sto ... read more

My comments on tutoring Journalism : Published in university newspaper several times.

I allow students to discover answers by themselves by prompting them with questions. This hands off technique reflects the minimalist philosophy of the writing center I worked for, and I have found it is a far more effective way to help students grasp concepts which will globally make their writing better. Understanding the fundamentals of good writing is the most important tool to becoming a good writer; where merely diagnosing an issue and giving an answer for it leads to much more lazy writing in the future. That's what makes fundamental understanding so important, because it carries over into future assignments.
As a student, I earned a 3.87 in my major of English Arts, while both working as an employee for the school writing center and as a contributor for the school newspaper. I also did a lot of moonlighting outside of the writing center as a personal tutor for undergrads, h ... read more

I love teaching in a one-on-one environment. I think that this environment makes it easier for teachers to be empathetic towards learning blockades. Last year I trained at a writing center on my university's campus and this experience refined my academic skills and my patience for learning. I believe that people can express themselves well if they are given good guidance.
After finishing my undergraduate work, I served in the Peace Corps for over two years. During this time I worked with various groups in the areas of elementary education tutoring, ESL for children and adults, and small-business training. When I finished the Peace Corps I was awarded a scholarship/fellowship to Duquesne University, where I completed my Master's degree. During this time I worked half-time with a nonprofit. At the end of my fellowship this nonprofit offered me a teaching job in conjunction with West ... read more

I believe the key to academic success is ensuring the student feels a sense of accomplishment and pride in self. My method of teaching focuses on determining the best learning style and beginning with lessons that will bring about success, and then challenging the student gradually. I try to make learning fun, while encouraging questions and an "out-of-the-box" approach to problem solving. The ultimate goal is to develop an independent and motivated learner.
I currently work as a professional science/health writer, and I have a keen grasp of literature comprehension, grammar, and composition. I have tutored students in English, math, and science. Additionally, I have volunteered as a soccer coach, Sunday school teacher, and "Hands-On Science" instructor in the classroom. I previously taught private swimming lessons and piano lessons for children.

A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching as an emergency substitute 3rd grade teacher. After 2 years, my husband's career took us to NY, OK, and PA where I continued to teach Religious Ed and substitute in parish schools.
